Startups: Increase in Startup Companies in Tamil Nadu Since 2021 | Chennai News

Chennai: After DMK formed govt in 2021, the number of startup companies in Tamil Nadu have increased four-fold. The same applied to startups headed by women as their number too increased three-fold. An official statement said, “In the last three years, 6,384 new startups have come up in the state. The number of startups increased from 2,032 in 2021 to 8,416 by April 2024.” Similarly, the startups owned by women increased three-fold as there were 966 startups in 2021 and now the number has increased to 3,163. “The reason for increase in startups is due to the conducive atmosphere prevailing in the state,” the statement said. The Tamil Nadu govt under chief minister M K Stalin has launched several initiatives for startups. One of the key initiatives was Tamil Nadu startup seed grant fund (TANSEED). “Under TANSEED, state govt provides financial support of around Rs 10lakh per startup. So far, 132 companies have availed financial aid to the tune of 13.95crore,” the statement said. With the intention to support innovation and scalable startups conceptualized and run by entrepreneurs from SC/ST communities, state govt launched TN SC/ST startup fund. When the scheme was launched in 2022-23, 30 crore was allocated and it was increased to 50crore in 2023-24. “So far, investments of 55.2crore have been guaranteed in 38 companies owned by SC/STs,” the statement said. Stalin, in the recently held Global Investors Meet (GIM), launched TANFUND, an online portal to link startups, which require funds, with investors. In the portal, 3,389 startups and 230 investors have registered. Through this portal, 714 meetings between startups and investors were organised. State govt also launched Mentor TN, another online portal, to link experts with startups. So far, 257 experts and 669 startups have registered. Through the portal, physical meetings are organised to provide guidance to startups by experts.
