SALEM, Ore. (KTVZ) – This week, the Oregon Senate passed Senate Bill 1571, which requires political campaigns in Oregon to disclose the use of audio or imagery generated by artificial intelligence in voter communications materials.
As AI tools become more sophisticated and available, states across the country are taking steps to defend voters and protect elections from AI-generated misinformation.
“As we’ve already seen in our elections, there are dangerous consequences when our regulations are playing catch up to technology and misinformation. We need to get out front of these threats to protect the integrity of our democracy, and I think this is a great first step,” said Senator Aaron Woods (D – Wilsonville), chief sponsor of SB 1571. “This bill will help arm Oregonians with the knowledge they need to make their own informed decisions at the ballot box.”
Woods said SB 1571 will help keep government stable, accountable, and transparent for all Oregonians, a key part of Senate Democrats’ Uniting Oregon Agenda.
The bill, approved 23-7 on Monday in the Senate, has moved on to the House, where a public hearing took place Thursday and a work session is scheduled for Monday.
