Google ‘democratising AI’ for non-expert app creators

Watch: Google is ‘democratising AI’ for non-expert business app creation

Google wants to “democratise artificial intelligence” with a product that allows even non-experts to create AI-powered applications.

Vertex AI harnesses Google’s (GOOG) datasets and online networks to create bespoke applications for a business’s specific needs. The product can be used by non-experts, according to Google’s senior director of product. Yariv Adan.

“What Google is doing is bringing all the technology and products that we have under a holistic approach. We introduced recently Vertex AI, which provides an end-to-end solution that caters not just to AI practitioners, but also to developers and business users,” Adan told Yahoo Finance.

“The thinking here is that we are democratising AI because artificial intelligence is so important now that we must make it accessible for all developers, even for those without any expertise in the area,” he added.

Google’s Vertex AI is a machine learning platform on Google Cloud that enables businesses to build, experiment, and deploy their own unique AI-powered applications.

Enterprises can use datasets specific to their sector to solve specific business problems, such as financial model generation and healthcare consulting tasks.

This means they can create AI applications and new models that are tailored to a business’s specific needs.

Generative AI as a technological transformation for our time

Adan described generative AI as another iteration of the technological transformations that are changing business and consumer behaviours.

“This is the third biggest transformation of our time. We’ve seen the web, we’ve seen smartphones, now we have generative artificial intelligence,” he said.

“We believe that AI is similar to these prior transformations, but more than this, it is much more foundational,” the Google director added.

He then described how Google’s AI software is being used to bring efficiencies to large call centres across the globe.

“We are supporting some of the largest and most complex call centres in the world. Some of them are very large telecommunications companies like Verizon (VZ) and AT&T (T) in the US, as well as banks and retail, such as Best Buy (BBY), The Home Depot (HD), and Walmart (WMT),” he said.

Google’s well positioned to develop AI-powered products

Regarding the question of whether Google is best positioned to provide machine learning applications with the necessary data, Adan clarified, “It’s not just about the data; it’s about the DNA. We have more than a decade of experience in building and scaling AI models and integrating them into our products, which gives us a significant advantage.”

Adan also spoke about the potential benefits and risks of AI for humanity, and highlighted the collective intelligence that the technology could bring to the world.

“AI is contributing to our collective intelligence, extending our capabilities as a society,” he said.

He also acknowledged the inherent risks associated with new technologies, but stressed that responsible development and collaboration with governments, academia and experts are essential to address such challenges.

In outlining Google’s approach to AI, Adan said, “We need to be bold in how we bring the advantages of new technologies to consumers and businesses, but we need to do it responsibly. We have a well-defined set of AI principles and are continuously updating them.”
