Five cheap and effective ways to banish mould from your home

AS temperatures get lower, your home becomes more susceptible to black mould.

Outbreaks can impact you and your family’s health, so it’s important to tackle it.

Gadgets such as dehumidifiers can help but there are cheaper ways.

Try these tips . . .

OPEN WINDOW: The fungus is usually caused by a build-up of condensation.

If you have showered or are drying washing inside, open the windows in that room to help remove moisture from the air.

Close the door and put a towel around gaps to stop the breeze chilling the rest of your home.

GET SALTY: A cup of salt in damp areas prone to mould is another cheap way of helping to absorb moisture from the air.

Change the salt when it starts to clump and is damp.

GREEN TOUCH: Some plants also absorb excess moisture in the air through their leaves — and they make a nice addition to the home.

Peace lilies and snake plants are two varieties known to help reduce moisture and reduce mould.

ROOM TO BREATHE: Try to avoid putting furniture right up against walls in rooms where you have seen mould breakouts.

The moisture becomes trapped and it’s harder to dry out those walls.

Likewise, keep your shower curtain spread out so that it can dry between uses.

You can also wash them if they start to look a little dirty to keep mould at bay.

KILL IT OFF: Mix two teaspoons of tea tree oil and two cups of water and use the solution to spray walls to help kill mould spores.

Vinegar spray is another way of killing off mould and preventing it from appearing.

You can make your own solution by mixing equal parts of white vinegar to water.

Or you can buy a version for around £1.

And bleach also works for getting rid of the growth.

Mix one part to four parts of water and treat affected areas by scrubbing with the solution.
