Facebook and Instagram down as thousands struggle to access popular apps

Facebook and Instagram are down for thousands of users around the world as many are unable to log in to the popular social media apps.

Facebook Messenger also appears to be affected. All three apps are owned and run by Meta, the US tech firm headed up by Mark Zuckerberg, which confirmed it was aware of the issues on Tuesday afternoon UK time.

“We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.”, Meta communications director Andy Stone posted to X, the social media site formerly known as Twitter.

More than 25,000 reports of Instagram not working were reported to Down Detector shortly before 4pm on Tuesday, while many took to X to see if were having the same issue.

“ok is it just me or is messenger BROKEN”, asked comedian Melanie Bracewell on X.

“Is meta down or am I being hacked? my instagram isn’t loading and my facebook is also “session logged out”, said @Fordtography.

The outages appear to be worldwide, with some online asking if such a widespread fault could be down to hackers.

Despite the problems with Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram, the Meta-run WhatsApp messaging app appeared to be working without issue.

While people discovered what it is like without social media working, brands wasted no time in getting in on the fun, with the officvial Guinness World Records X account posting “hello everyone who cannot access Instagram or Facebook” to get in on the viral action.

When apps stop working like this, there is not much you can do. The issue lies with Meta, not your device, so you simply have to wait until whatever the issue is gets fixed.
