One can’t judge a book by its cover and several video game characters who prove that statement as fact. Whether they are rude or crude, these characters are usually described as being anti-heroes, doing what’s right even if they lack the heroic attributes befitting of most heroes. These characters certainly aren’t here to make friends or have gentle conversations.

6 Chris Redfield – Resident Evil Series

Resident Evil Village Chris Redfield Mercenaries

As one of the most iconic and well-liked characters in the Resident Evil franchise, Chris Redfield was introduced in the very first Resident Evil game and has been included in the majority of the franchise for decades. Most people would call him a hero but very few people would call him nice. Before Chris joined S.T.A.R.S., he was in the US Air Force but was discharged for insubordination because of disagreements he had with his superiors.

After supposedly losing Jill before the beginning of Resident Evil 5, Chris became distant and cold and didn’t show any particular concern for his new partner Sheva outside of completing his mission. He becomes cold and serious in Resident Evil: Village though he still displays his stubborn and sometimes reckless personality. Despite all of this, Chris has saved the world from Umbrella and Bio Organic Weapons countless times through the years. He has dedicated his life to finding and putting a stop to them.

5 Dani Rojas (Far Cry 6)

Dani Rojas is the protagonist of Far Cry 6. Whether players choose to make Dani male or female, doesn’t change Dani’s personality at all. Dani ended up dropping out of the military after they punched their drill instructor. And at the beginning of the game, Dani is very cynical and apathetic towards the Revolution happening in Yara, as they try to escape to the US. Their reason for even joining the guerrilla movement Libertad was more out of wanting to secure a way to escape from Yara than really wanting to join the resistance.

But as Dani becomes more involved with Libertad and sees the heinous acts done by Anton and his regime, Dani becomes more compassionate and willing to fight. Dani has a violent nature, and at times genuinely seems to enjoy the damage they cause, but Dani shows that they have a kind heart at their core as they don’t want to kill Casillo’s son Diego and they have genuine empathy for him.

4 Bayonetta (Bayonetta)

Bayonetta in Bayonetta 3

Bayonetta is the hero of the game series that bares her name, Bayonetta, but she isn’t exactly the nicest game protagonist around. She’s somewhat snarky and callous, brutal, and pretty nonchalant in a majority of situations.

As an Umbra Witch, part of her power is making a contract with specific demons from Inferno to be able to summon them to do her bidding, using them to kill angels and other demons as well. Despite all of these things Bayonetta has been one of the few people between the destruction of humanity from all sorts of otherworldly danger.

3 Ragna The Bloodedge (BlazBlue)

The BlazBlue games can be a bit confusing, depending on which game a player starts with. Set in a world that was nearly destroyed by a creature called the “Black Beast”, six heroes saved the world and helped humanity create their means for fighting against the Black Beast, the Ars Magus, which is a fusion of magic and science.

Ragna the Bloodedge is the main protagonist of the BlazBlue C-Series. Ragna is put as the number one enemy of the organization that creates and regulates the Ars Magus, the Novus Orbis Librarium, or the Library for short. Known as the Grim Reaper, Ragna sets out to destroy the Library. Despite being rough, brash, and pretty antisocial, Ragna is one of the few people who actively fight against the oppression of the Library.

2 Doom Slayer/ Doom Guy (DOOM)

Doom Slayer in Doom Eternal

Doom Slayer, or Doom Guy is the protagonist and hero of the Doom game series. His acts against demons are violent and merciless and are what gives the series its M rating. Despite how violent he is, still a major force of good as he’s slaughtering demons to stop the destruction of humanity as Hell’s armies have invaded Earth.

Demons are the only beings that he seeks to destroy. He won’t even kill humans that stand in his way or that side with the demons, though he has no problem getting rough with them if they have something he needs. He also has a pet rabbit, named Daisy in the original Doom, who he cares about a lot.

1 Zero – (Drakengard 3)

Drakengard 3 - Best Hack And Slash Games Aside From Hyrule Warriors

As the protagonist and hero of Drakengard 3, a sort of prequel to the first Drakengard game, Zero is presented as anything but a hero from the moment she appears on-screen. She kills several of the soldiers that stand in her way of getting to her 5 sisters, who she plans to kill to be the only Intoner in the world. She switches between being apathetic and bitter when she’s not fighting, to violent and hot-tempered when she is fighting.

She’s even mean to her dragon partner Mikhail who has a gentle and childlike personality. Zero doesn’t mention her true reason for wanting to kill her sisters, which is to stop the evil entity known as The Flower, from destroying the world. She takes on the task of killing her sisters because she feels that the existence of them and the threat they pose to the world is her fault.
