Xiaomi Unveils Its Very First Smartphone With Waterdrop Notch

Xiaomi has just announced its very first smartphone with a teardrop notch, the Xiaomi Mi Play. The notch on this phone is a bit different than the one on the OnePlus 6T, for example, as it has a different shape, its sides are going straight up, not to the side. As far as the rest of its design is concerned, the phone is made out of metal and glass, and it sports a “chin” below the display. All its physical keys are located on the right side, while the phone’s display sports rounded corners. The device includes two vertically-aligned cameras on the back, and those cameras are located in the upper-left portion of the phone’s back side. A fingerprint scanner can also be found on the back of the device, and the same goes for the company’s logo as well.

Now, as far as specs are concerned, it’s worth noting that this is a mid-range smartphone, it is fueled by the MediaTek Helio P35 64-bit octa-core processor, which is one of MediaTek’s most powerful mid-range processors at the moment. The phone features a 5.84-inch fullHD+ (2280 x 1080) display, along with a 2.5D curved glass on top of it. The device includes 4GB of LPDDR4X RAM, and 64GB of storage (expandable up to 256GB via a microSD card). Android 8.1 Oreo comes pre-installed on the device, along with MIUI 10, while a 3,000mAh battery is also a part of the package. 12-megapixel (f/2.2 aperture, 1.25um pixel size, PDAF, EIS) and 2-megapixel cameras are located on the back of the phone, while a single 8-megapixel camera sits on the phone’s front side. The phone comes with two nano SIM card slots (hybrid setup), while dual 4G VoLTE and Bluetooth 4.2 are also included here.

This smartphone has been announced in China, and it comes in Black, Dream Blue, and Twilight Gold color variants. The phone is priced at 1,099 Yuan ($159) in the country, which is, needless to say, a really affordable price tag. The phone is already available for pre-order in China, and it remains to be seen if it will reach other markets, though chances are it will. Whatever the case may be, Xiaomi did not share any info regarding that at the moment.

Xiaomi And Notches

Xiaomi had introduced quite a few smartphones in 2018, and quite a few of them had notches, actually. Phone ranging from mid-rangers like the Mi 8 SE and Mi A2 Lite, to high-end handsets like the Mi 8 and Mi 8 Pro. All of those notches were quite large, actually… well, wide is the right word to describe them, so the Mi Play is not only the company’s first smartphone with a teardrop notch, but also the company’s smartphone with the smallest notch. Interestingly enough, the company’s current flagship, the Mi MIX 3, does not sport a display notch at all, it comes with a camera sliding mechanism. In 2019, Xiaomi will probably start releasing handsets with display camera holes, like many other companies, though for the time being, notches are still in as far as Xiaomi is considered. It will be interesting to see if Xiaomi will release another smartphone with a teardrop notch, or will the next announcement include a phone with a display camera hole, as we did not see any leaks regarding the company’s phones with such front-facing camera implementation, so… who knows.

What About The Mi 9?

Considering it’s the end of the year, many of you who are interested in Xiaomi’s phones are probably wondering what will the Mi 9 bring to the table. Well, truth be said, it’s a bit early to talk about that handset, as it will probably not arrive before mid-2019, but if Xiaomi ends up following trends, then you can expect to see an in-display camera hole on that device, even though most companies would probably skip that part as well, and simply include a camera under the display, but the technology is not there yet. It is possible that 2020 will bring under the display cameras, but that’s only a possibility, as images taken with such cameras are too blurry and are simply not up to standard. In any case, we’re expecting the Mi 9 rumors and leaks to start rolling out in early 2019, though we’ll probably see a ton of fake info at first.
