WhatsApp: How to react and reply to messages

WhatsApp users can now react to messages in individual and group chats with a series of emojis.

Mark Zuckerberg shared the news about the feature’s rollout in a Facebook post this week.

There are six reactions available, with more set to come according to the Facebook boss.

The emoji reactions do come with limitations, however.

You can only add one reaction per message which is pretty standard across the Meta-owned apps like Facebook and Instagram.

Unlike Facebook Messenger, you cannot change the reaction emojis, though it has more options than the single ‘like message’ feature on Instagram.

The emoji reactions, common on apps like Slack and Telegram, are set to be an important feature going forward as WhatsApp expands the size of group chats from 256 to 512 members.

But how do you react and reply to messages on WhatsApp? Here’s what you need to know:

How to react to messages on WhatsApp

You can now react to messages on WhatsApp

Like Facebook Messenger you can now react to messages you receive on WhatsApp, and people can react to those you send.

To react to a message, you simply need to hold it for a few seconds to select it.

The react bar will appear with six different reactions – a thumbs up, a heart, a laughing face, a shocked face, a crying face, and a thumbs up.

Simply click the reaction you would like to use, and it will appear on the bottom right-hand side of the message.

Users can view all reactions to a message by tapping the reactions emoji below the message.

However, it’s not possible to hide reactions or reaction counts so you might want to be careful with it.

To remove your emoji reaction to a message, you can just long-press the message and tap the emoji you reacted with to remove it.

Recipients might see your reaction before you remove it or if removing it wasn’t successful. WhatsApp warned that you won’t be notified if removing a reaction wasn’t successful.

Perfect for a busy group chat, if you want to make it perfectly clear who you’re replying to you can directly reply to a message on WhatsApp.

To do this, you need to highlight the message as if you’re going to react to it.

Then, in the top right-hand corner of the app, you need to click on the arrow pointing left to reply.

The arrow pointing right forwards messages to other people.

When you click the reply button, the message you’re replying to will appear above the usual text box.

You then just type your reply and send it, and your message will appear underneath in the thread.
