videogame movie adds Cate Blanchett – Film Stories

Eli Roth’s big screen take on the Borderlands videogame franchise will see him reunite with Cate Blanchett for the upcoming movie.

There’s been a substantial piece of progress where the planned movie of the Borderlands videogame franchise is concerned. The film had been set up at Lionsgate, and for a little while Eli Roth has been on board to direct the feature.

The screenplay has been penned by Craig Mazin (Chernobyl), and the project looks set to start production later this year. That’s obviously assuming it can go into production before the year is out, but pieces are sliding into place.

In particular, as you’ve probably gleamed by the headline to this piece, something of a casting coup. Academy Award-winner Cate Blanchett is set to take on the role of Lilith in the film. She previously worked with Roth on The House With The Clock In Its Walls, and now she plays one of a quartet of vault hunters exploring a seemingly-abandoned planet. Nothing could go wrong.

There’s still more casting news to go, of course, but it’s not a bad start, is it?

In a statement, Roth said that “I’m so lucky to have the amazing Cate Blanchett starring in Borderlands. We had the most incredible collaboration together on The House With A Clock In Its Walls, and I believe there’s nothing she can’t do. From drama to comedy and now action, Cate makes every scene sing. Working with her is truly a director’s dream come true, and I feel so fortunate that I get to do it again on an even bigger scale. Everyone brings their A-game to work with Cate, and I know together we’re going to create another iconic character in her already storied career.”

No word yet on a release date, but we’ll keep you posted as we hear more.
