The UK recently ranked 20th out of 22 countries in a new flagship wellbeing poll, which assessed quality of life across six continents based on factors like happiness, health, relationships, and life satisfaction. This raises concerns about the nation’s support for overall wellbeing, especially as one in ten Brits wait over a year for talking therapies, despite the fact that many need to talk now more than ever before.
As August marks National Wellness Month, many people across the country are seeking new ways to make meaningful connections with others, where they can express their feelings in a friendly environment – and online platforms are offering a key solution.
A study, by the all-in-one online video chat platform Azar, found that 58% of UK adults have been able to overcome feelings of loneliness, with making new friends online (20%), engaging in meaningful conversations with people through digital platforms (16%), and using online video chat services (15%) common ways to alleviate negative feelings.
The rise of online chat forums and new video chat technologies is helping to reshape the wellness game – giving individuals the chance to open up and talk freely with others around the globe.
For 22-year-old Laura and 39 year-old Tim, both from the UK, this new wave of online connection found though Azar has been life-changing. Not only has it expanded their worldviews, but it has also created a shared space of emotional and educational intimacy.
Laura (alias), aged 22, says: “One night, I matched with someone from another country, I think it was Turkey, and we ended up talking for over an hour. What started off as small talk quickly turned into a deep conversation about mental health, relationships, and personal struggles. That’s what I’ve come to appreciate about Azar. It gives you this unique space where you can talk to someone without baggage, without expectation. It’s like therapy in disguise sometimes – especially when you’re not looking for anything serious but end up getting something meaningful.
Tim (alias), aged 39, says: “Chats on the app have been nothing short of illuminating and captivating. The way we delve into deep discussions about life, share our unique perspectives on the world, and exchange fascinating stories never fails to spark my curiosity and ignite my passion for learning. Our conversations are like a breath of fresh air in a world filled with mundane chatter, and I feel like I’m discovering new dimensions of thought and imagination with each interaction.”
Over half (52%) of UK Azar users were able to alleviate feelings of loneliness via the app, and one in five (21%) reported a noticeable drop in their stress levels after connecting and chatting with other users.
The platform’s global chat function offers a space to talk to someone from across the world, where users can engage in deep discussions fast through uninhibited and intimate conversation, sharing moments of discovery along the way.
“Designed to foster authentic connections, Azar’s tools and technology help facilitate more safe and meaningful interactions”, says Sunki Kim, Vice President and Head of Azar at Hyperconnect. “Whether it’s cultivating friendship, emotional support, or even educational stimulus, our mission is to help people create genuine global interactions.”
