‘The Wonderful 101’ Kickstarter Brings Wii U Gem to More Platforms

The Wii U was a console with a lot of great games but not a lot of owners. So before the Nintendo Switch even came out we hoped the handheld/console hybrid would save many Wii U classics and give them a shot at real success on a much more promising platform. And that’s basically what happened. Nearly every worthwhile Wii U is now on Switch and it’s great.

One holdout though has been The Wonderful 101. The first-year Wii U release took the stylish technical character action gameplay Platinum Games had cultivated in Bayonetta and transplanted it onto an almost Pikmin-esque arcade real-time strategy game. The various looping gestures you pull off in recent Platinum million-seller Astral Chain has roots in this fighting style. On top of all that gameplay weirdness was the presentation weirdness of this colorful Super Sentai corny Saturday Morning cartoon world. Unsurprisingly, the game garnered a loyal but small fanbase. The small band of freaks ready to sing the theme song at a moment’s notice.

Nintendo originally published The Wonderful 101 just like it has published later Platinum exclusives. However, it seems the rights remain with the developer. And now Platinum is resurrecting the game on their own with their first self-published Kickstarter.

Rumors of this Wonderful 101 Kickstarter first cropped this weekend thanks to a report by GameXplain. And they were pretty much right on the money. Platinum is asking fans to help fund a port of The Wonderful 101 not just to the Nintendo Switch but also Steam and PlayStation 4 if stretch goals are reached. New content is also a possibility. Considering the original goal was cleared before I could even finish writing this article, I’m feeling pretty confident we’ll see Kamiya’s super babies on Sony’s system.

Not to say that porting a game is easy, but it’s surely a more modest task than building an entire new game from scratch. So when Platinum says it can release the remaster and various shiny backer rewards (like being blocked by Kamiya on Twitter) before the end of this year I’m not too doubtful. If there’s one sour note, it’s that Platinum has partnered with Dangen Entertainment for this project, a company that’s faced recent controversy concerning sexual harassment from management.

It seems The Wonderful 101: Remastered Kickstarter isn’t the only Platinum news we can expect soon though. The developer recently launched a website called “Platinum 4” teasing three other announcements alongside this one. A full reveal of Bayonetta 3 has got to be coming soon, right? Right?!?
