Tech review: Huawei Watch GT2e smartwatch

Meet the latest watch from the world’s second biggest wearable tech firm: Huawei Watch GT2e.

The arrival of Huawei Watch GT2e comes as the Chinese firm was declared the world’s second most popular manufacturer of wearable tech after market leader Apple.

It led the way ahead of third placed Samsung by shipping almost one million more units.

The innovative Chinese firm’s latest smart watch is the GT2e, a less expensive version of the recent GT2 model.

Huawei Watch GT2e

It looks sportier, has a stainless steel and plastic build with a silicone strap. And it features a host of new fitness-tracking options.

It’s aimed at casual fitness enthusiasts who do not need much from their smartwatch.

Battery life is the big selling point. You will get up to 14 days.

There is an always-on display option that will decrease your battery life by several days.

But even with the display always on, along with the heart rate sensor, I still got about 10 days from a single charge.

The screen is stunning, a really bright 1.39in AMOLED display that looks great on your wrist.

It has 454 x 454 resolution, can be viewed easily in sunlight and delivers plenty of contrast.

Huawei has included 100 workout modes. These track everything from running and cycling through to various strength and dance exercises.

Using the running, cycling and swimming modes, you get route details, pace, duration, calories burned, heart rate zones, cadence and altitude details.

For other exercises such as belly dancing, you get total duration, heart rate, and calories burned.

The level of insight into your activities in the Huawei Health app is exceptional. All of your stats are presented clearly and concisely.

Activity tracker

Huawei Watch GT 2e is also a fantastic everyday activity tracker. It monitors your steps and heart rate, for example, and gives you a daily, weekly and monthly trends.

It can also measure your sleep quality. In fact, the detailed sleep tracking is excellent.

Sensors onboard include GPS, optical heart rate sensor, accelerometer and gyroscope. It tracks distance traveled, active minutes, stress levels, calories burned and floors climbed.

I paired it with several Huawei devices, a Samsung smartphone and a Pixel 4 XL. It worked seamlessly with all of these phones.

The downside for some users is the limitation on notifications but this appealed to me.

You can’t reply to emails or texts from the watch but you can glance at them. And if something is important enough you can always take out your phone.

Also, there is no speaker so you can’t make or take Bluetooth calls.

And the number of watch face options is limited.

But there is music storage. You can store up to 500 songs on Huawei Watch GT2e, and it is easy to load up music files. There is no compatibility with services such as Tidal or Spotify.

Watch GT2e has a remote camera shutter feature which helps you take a snap on your phone quickly.

If you want the full smartwatch experience and be able to make and take calls and reply to all of your messages then Huawei Watch GT2e is not for you.

But if you want a stylish and powerful fitness tracker that can play music, has excellent battery life, is great value and offers a slimmed-down smartphone experience then Watch GT2e should be top of your list.

Huawei Watch GT2e costs €169 from Three.
