Spiritual Successor to Google Reader Arrives in Latest Chrome for Android Update – Review Geek

Andrew Heinzman

Back in May, Google’s Paul Bakaus announced a new Chrome feature called Web Feed. It’s a spiritual successor to Google Reader, allowing you to follow sites’ RSS feeds and curate the content that arrives on your Chrome homepage. Now, Web Feed is finally available in a stable Chrome for Android release, though you must enable the feature manually.

As reported by Android Police, anyone with the latest version of Chrome for Android (version 92) can enable Web Feed through the flags menu. The process is quite simple—just copy-paste chrome://flags/#web-feed into your address bar, select Web Feed, and pick the “Enable” option. Chrome will then reboot to activate the Web Feed feature.

Congrats, you can now follow your favorite sites’ RSS feeds. Visit a news site or blog and press the menu icon (three dots) in the top right corner of your Chrome app. Then, press the “Follow” button at the bottom of the drop down menu.

Followed websites will show up in the “Following” tab of your Chrome homepage, right next to the “For You” tab. If you hate the algorithm, then you’ll love curating a Web Feed! The whole experience feels a bit nostalgic.

There’s just a few things to keep in mind here. Like most features that hide behind Chrome flags, Web Feed is a bit unpolished and may not work perfectly. Plus, the “Following” feed doesn’t have a manual refresh button yet, so you won’t get instant updates from your favorite sites. Future versions of Chrome will probably iron out these kinks, and Web Feed will eventually (hopefully, maybe) exit flags and become a standard feature for all users.

Now Google just needs to add Web Feed to the desktop browser! If you’re having trouble activating Web Feed, jump into the Play Store and update to Chrome version 92. You can also download Chrome version 92 from APK Mirror.
