Sennheiser CX 400BT True Wireless earbuds review: These earphones offer amazing sound

Sennheiser reckon this new piece of kit is the ideal ‘everyday earbud’ and having given it a good go, it’s hard to disagree.

The CX 400BTs are a great bit of technology and deliver fantastic sound at a mid-range price.

The look of them put me off at first, the boxy square shape feels at odds with the shape of our ears and I was expecting discomfort despite their light weight.

But the Sennheiser’s popped straight in comfortably, and with a recommended twist in place, they stayed in firmly, way better than many of the other earbuds I’ve tried before.

These earphones have been ideal in lockdown, perfect company for long wintry walks as we dream of a near-future where the country opens up again.

The case for the CX 400BTs is compact and fits neatly in a pocket

The Sennheiser CX 400BT True Wireless earbuds are square shaped rather than the normal oval design of rivals

I’d grown used to some mid-level Nokia earbuds I’d been using for some time but the minute I put these bad boys in the sound felt instantly superior. Less fuzz around the edges, delivering smoother sound in a variety of styles.

You could easily pick out the high trills of a guitar solo, or the deep bass of a dance groove, there was no awkward mish-mash in the various elements of any type of song I tried. That is something you do get in cheaper alternatives.

And while these aren’t in the mega pricey bracket, they do offer real aural quality, particularly on my favourite guitar-based rock music.

The 7mm dynamic drivers made my best tunes an even greater pleasure to listen to and the lightness in their design, coupled with the dedication to staying in-ear on a fast-paced walk or even when jogging was a great bonus.

The charging box for these earbuds is small by comparison to others in this price range, but they still deliver 20 hours of battery life, seven in the bud and 13 in the recharge unit.

The bluetooth connection never dropped during my extensive use.

Sennheiser is well known for it’s quality sound and has produced some great earbuds here

And with the Sennheiser Smart Control app it’s possible to tailor the sound experience to your personal preference via the built-in equaliser.

You can even customise the control on the bud itself to suit your needs, which is great, say, when you want to avoid accidentally pausing of a tune when you’ve got an itchy ear.

On phone calls, it’s worth noting the ambient noise reduction microphones work well too, allowing crisp calls without too much background bleed.

The makers of these buds say they’ve been designed for ‘fast-paced, always-on lifestyles’.

Sennheiser CX 400BT True Wireless earbuds look a bit clunky visually

I’m looking forward to giving them a go once life returns to a more hectic pace.

But right now if you want some affordable high-end, high quality earbuds that stay in your ear and sound cracking, you can’t really go too wrong.

I would say though, next time, Sennheiser should revise these earphones with a slightly sexier, curvier look.
