Seeing Pop-up Ads on Roku TV? Here’s How to Disable Them – Review Geek

Early last year, reports emerged that some Roku smart TV owners saw banner ads and pop-ups overlayed on top of live TV content, and now we’re seeing it again here in 2022. According to several comments on Reddit, users are experiencing banner and interactive ads on their Roku TVs.

It appears to happen most often while users watch cable TV or local channels with an antenna. This is because there’s an option on Roku TVs that allows the company to use content from an antenna or connected devices (over HDMI) to listen, then suggest additional streaming content and display ads relevant to the user.

We’ve seen movie suggestions from Geico during a Geico commercial or Sleep Number bed ads, and more from CordCutterNews.

As you can see from the image above, this is an interactive clickable ad where users can click “OK” to get the offer. All while trying to watch an NFL wildcard playoff game. Again, this is nothing new and how Roku makes a lot of its revenue, but when we reached out to Roku for comment, all it had to say was, “We are aware and it has been resolved.”

Roku ads are typically shown while watching content through Roku apps, while watching live TV over an antenna, or displayed on menus, but it looks like the company is testing out a few more options as we move forward.

If you see pop-up ads on Roku, it’s not just you, and here’s how to disable them.

Thankfully, these are easy to remove by unchecking a box in the settings menu on your Roku smart TV. For example, simply turn on your Roku TV, navigate to the Settings menu, and select Privacy. From here, click Smart TV experience and uncheck the box for Use info from TV inputs. You can also disable the advertising option in the privacy menu, which may limit ads.
