Science Day at Crossroads Village to showcase evolution of telegraph to smartphone, robot creation and more

FLINT, MI — A day of science hosted at a living history museum in Genesee County is scheduled to offer a slew of activities for all ages this weekend.

Science Day takes place from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, July 31 at Crossroads Village and Huckleberry Railroad, 6140 Bray Road, Genesee Township.

The event, organized by the Genesee County Parks and Recreation Commission, costs $11 per person to enter the village.

Science Day will feature activities from Kettering FIRST Robotics, U of M Flint’s Natural Sciences Department, Factory Two, Delta College’s STEM Explorer bus and more.

The event is sponsored by Parker’s Propane, according to the event page.

Factory Two staff will be showing TIE fighters and X-wing fighter model kits made on the laser cutter, according to the non-profit’s Facebook page.

The Delta STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) explorer bus will feature a STEM related activity by showing a correlation between some original inventions and how they’ve evolved over the years, Hollie Marlett, parks communications specialist, said.

“From telegraph to telephone, to smartphones and that type of thing, so the kids can see that it wasn’t always just what they see today, that it starts out as maybe the telegraph and moves forward,” Marlett said of the STEM activity. “So we’re bringing the 1800s to the future and beyond, and they learn some things with science.”

The event will also feature a “creation station”, where participants can build their own robots made out of nuts and bolts and recycle items, she said.

These family friendly activities are designed to spark an interest in science and technology.

During the time of the event, other attractions will be open in the village too, such as the train, carousel, ferris wheel and vintage rides.
