Rumor: ‘Galaxy S20’ is Samsung’s Next Flagship Smartphone | News & Opinion

Samsung will use the name ‘Galaxy S20’ rather than ‘Galaxy S11’ for its upcoming flagship, according to insider Ice Universe. Both the Galaxy S20+ and the Galaxy S20e should join in arriving early next year.

New flagships are due out in early 2020, and Samsung’s Galaxy S11 should be one of the most popular. Actually, it might not be known by that name at all.

Samsung, according to insider Ice Universe, might decide to release its latest and greatest smartphone as the ‘Galaxy S20’ globally. Now, it appears the South Korean company’s executives weren’t kidding around when they teased the idea of rebranding the top-tier series before. As the calendar turns over to a new decade, Samsung could usher in a new identity.

Ice Universe tweeted out “Galaxy S20” earlier in the week. It felt cryptic, but then another tweet followed stating “next year is 2020, and 20 is a new beginning.” Given the insider’s reliable track record, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Samsung did rename its next flagship in the Galaxy S series.

Though not a full-blown rebrand, Samsung would depart from an approach to naming that started almost ten years ago. Each year, the South Korean company has rolled out a high-end smartphone succeeding its predecessor numerically. Samsung skipped the Galaxy Note 6 several years ago to align the Galaxy Note series’ models with the Galaxy S series, but that won’t seem important anymore if this change occurs.

The name ‘Galaxy S20’ could start with the decade and match subsequent years, meaning we’d see the ‘Galaxy S21’ in 2021. It’s unclear what exactly Samsung has planned, though.

Reports have indicated what the Galaxy S20 might offer. In addition to a hole-punch and five-camera setup, this high-end smartphone should sport an Infinity Display with curved edges. Samsung should also offer 5G connectivity, but LTE networks will be supported as well.

Both the Galaxy S20+ and the Galaxy S20e should join in arriving early next year. Samsung releases multiple variants in the Galaxy S series to attract consumers with different tastes and budgets.

Samsung’s global debut for the Galaxy S20 could take place during MWC 2020. The Barcelona-based trade show is scheduled for February 24-27. While the Galaxy S20 will earn plenty of attention, don’t rule out the possibility of Samsung unveiling the Galaxy Fold 2 at the same time. Next year, Samsung might have a handful of flagships to choose from.
