U.S. Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Brandon Diep, a native of Riverside, serves as a gunner’s mate at Naval Station (NAVSTA) Newport, in Newport, R.I.

Diep joined the Navy five and a half years ago for the opportunities the military offers.

“I knew I wanted to do something different from the traditional college path,” Diep said in a news release.

“I wanted to travel the world and learn from life experiences before heading to higher education and picking a major I wasn’t sure I would be 100% passionate about,” Diep said.

Diep is responsible for the operation and maintenance of missile launch systems, underwater explosive weapons, gun mounts and other ordnance equipment.

Growing up in Riverside, Diep attended La Sierra High School and graduated in 2015.

“Growing up, my parents always stressed to ‘do what makes you happy,’” Diep said in the news release. “They wanted me to do something different with my life, but when I found my Navy path, they were happy for me because I showed them that I was happy in the Navy.”
