How many subscriptions do you have? The last time I checked, I had a lot. For music I have Spotify, Apple Music and Amazon Music; for film and television it’s Netflix, Apple TV+, Amazon Prime and Sky.
Then there are the games, including Apple Arcade and Xbox Live Gold, and even my doorbell, which has a camera I can access via my smartphone, letting me see who is on my doorstep — for a fee.
And that’s before I start counting the weird and wonderful: monthly deliveries of chocolate, wine and, at one point, socks. Yes, really.
It’s not because I’m addicted, I promise, but because that’s the way the world is heading. We have become a nation of subscribers.
