Reddit kills a time-honoured tradition and users are livid about it

Reddit has announced its annual Secret Santa gift exchange will be closing down.

The event, which has been taking place every year since 2009, has facilitated the exchange of millions of presents around the world.

Several famous faces have taken part in the gift exchange, such as Bill Gates, Jimmy Fallon and Snoop Dogg.

But alas, 2021 will be its last year of existence.

‘We made the difficult decision to shut down Reddit Gifts and put more focus on enhancing the user experience on Reddit – this includes investing in the foundation of our platform and moderator tools, making it more accessible for people around the world and evolving how people engage with one another,’ Reddit said in a statement on the r/announcements subreddit.

The news has been met with a furious backlash from users.

Many of the top posts on the announcement give an indication of the anger of the Reddit community.

‘Translation – we weren’t making enough money off this to be worth our time and effort,’ one wrote.

‘A great community project, swallowed up by the company, and now taken out back and put down,’ another said.

Reddit said it didn’t take the decision lightly, and will be diverting funds to ‘put more focus on enhancing the user experience on Reddit’. Including things like improving moderator tools and improving accessibility.

Ahead of the final exchange of 2021, the company said it had also disabled the creation of new Reddit Gifts accounts. It will also ‘turn off the ability to buy Elves’, which is basically a premium membership for Reddit Gifts.

‘We’re hopeful that spirit will continue in the future,’ the company said.

Plans are already happening to create a replacement.

A newly-formed subreddit ‘newsecretsanta’ already has over 10,000 members.
