Realme X7 Pro 5G mobile review – democratising 5G

  • The Realme X7 Pro 5G promises to be the new affordable flagship killer, thanks to some great features at an attractive price.
  • The main highlight of the device is the new Dimensity 1000+ chipset with 5G support.
  • But there’s more to this Realme phone than just the chipset and 5G.
  • Read our detailed Realme X7 Pro 5G review to find out if this can be your next smartphone.

While 5G is one of the main selling points of the Realme X7 Pro 5G, it is not the only killer feature.

Realme promises to offer a great value proposition with the X7 Pro 5G, and chipmaker MediaTek aims to make a comeback in the affordable flagship segment with its new Dimensity series of chipsets. The new Dimensity-powered phones promise to offer smooth performance, competing with Snapdragon-powered phones.

The expectations from the Realme X7 Pro 5G are high. Does it manage to deliver on the promise? I try to find that out in my review.

Realme X7 Pro 5G price and availability

The Realme X7 Pro 5G is priced at ₹29,999 and is available in Fantasy and Mystic Black colour options. It is available from Flipkart, Realme online store and offline stores across the country.

Here are some other 5G-ready phones in this price range:

Design and build quality

Realme has adopted a very simple and elegant philosophy with the X7 Pro 5G. I have one word to describe it – neat.

The display takes up almost all the space on the front thanks to thin bezels. On the back, there is a very clean-looking camera module with the Realme branding on the bottom left.

The rest of the back is bare and comes with a mirror finish, which can be useful if you want to click selfies using the rear cameras.

The phone is light enough to be comfortable during extended hours of use. It also feels solid with no squeaky noises.

Display

It comes with a 6.55-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate. For instance, some other phones with 120Hz displays are the Xiaomi Mi 10i and Mi 10T, OnePlus 8 Pro and 8T, and Samsung Galaxy S20 and S21 series.

This ticks nearly all the boxes for most smartphone enthusiasts. It is rated at up to 1200 nits brightness, promising to offer great readability.

In real life, I found the display to be really good, with excellent colour reproduction. The 120Hz refresh rate ensures that it is extremely smooth. It is perfectly readable under direct sunlight as well.

Performance and battery life

The Realme X7 Pro 5G is powered by the Dimensity 1000+ chipset, paired with 8GB of memory and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage.

I was slightly skeptical about using a MediaTek chipset instead of Qualcomm, but this phone has put my concerns to rest.

While I expected stutters while scrolling and navigating through the interface, in actual usage the phone was as smooth as it can be. I played some graphic intensive games as well and the overall performance was great.

In terms of battery life, the Realme X7 Pro 5G lasted me through the evening, thanks to the 4,500mAh battery. But the killer feature is 65W SuperDart charging support.

I went from 0-100% in under 40 minutes – that is really, really fast. For context, some other phones with 25W charging can take over an hour to go from 0-100%.

Camera

The Realme X7 Pro 5G comes with a quad camera setup on the back, with a 64MP camera with a Sony sensor and an 8MP ultrawide angle lens. There are two 2MP snappers for capturing portrait and macro photos.

The 64MP and 8MP cameras are the most useful of the four. In regular daylight conditions, I found that the phone captured decent photos, but the colours were marginally washed out. At 2x zoom, the colour reproduction was closer to the true colours.

The X7 Pro 5G performed well in indoor lighting conditions even with multiple light sources.

The phone’s performance in night mode was surprisingly good, with the colours being fairly accurate.

Software

The Realme X7 Pro 5G comes with Realme UI 1.0 based on Android 10 and as per the company, Android 11 based Realme UI 2.0 update will be rolled out in the coming days.

Realme UI is feature packed and sports a slightly customized interface when compared to stock Android. Despite the additional features, I found the experience to be fluid and without any lags. There are some bundled apps that come with the phone, but they can be uninstalled if you don’t want them.

Verdict

All things considered, the Realme X7 Pro 5G is a great option if you want almost-flagship experience for a fraction of the price. The phone looks really clean, ticks all the boxes when it comes to performance and the camera is decent in most conditions.

All in all, the Realme X7 Pro 5G offers great value for money.
