‘PUBG’ Story Trailer Teases the Unknown Player

When PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds first launched in 2017, it was the only real battle royale game in town. Yeah it was kind of janky but no other game let you instantly parachute onto an island full of weapons and 99 other players until there was only one left standing. And that was enough.

But in 2019 that’s not enough anymore. Yeah PUBG is still massively successfully, but rivals like Apex Legends and Fortnite offer more polish and bigger user bases for zero cost upfront. Plus those games have a recognizable visual identity PUBG does not. The storm is closing in, but PUBG isn’t giving up yet.

Check out this new trailer for PUBG season 4 including its new story content.

What does a PUBG story even look like? Does this game have lore now? This trailer teases answers to those questions and more by seemingly starring the unknown player behind these battlegrounds. And it’s not Brendan Greene. The narrator talks about being the sole survivor of some kind of disaster in 1965 as a child in Erangel, PUBG’s original vaguely Eastern-European map. And now as an adult he’s enacting revenge by making hundreds of other people battle for survival on the same island?

When you add a story to PUBG you really just start to reveal how much this game rips off the movie Battle Royale. This is just a preview of what will happen if some bozo in Hollywood ever greenlights a PUBG movie. But it is nice to see the game try something this ambitious and, again, do anything to set itself apart from other more distinct battle royale games.

PUBG season 4 with the new story content launches July 24. For more on PUBG learn why Jordan (the country) has just banned the game and get a physical version of the actual best battle royale game: Tetris 99.
