While Southeast Texas missed the worst impacts of Hurricane Delta, continued power outages across the region have causes some schools to cancel classes for the beginning of the week.
“We’re continuing to assess our infrastructure in the aftermath of the latest storm,” Mike Tobias, a spokesperson for Port-Neches Groves ISD said in a letter. “At this moment, not all PNGISD campuses have power.”
Campuses will remain closed Monday, with teachers tentatively returning Tuesday and normal school resuming Wednesday, although that is subject to change depending on the status of power restoration.
“Maintenance personnel are seeing power restoration progressing quickly, however we are still aware that much of the community remains without it,” Tobias said in the letter. “Should the need arise to change our return date, we will make a determination later this week.”
This is the second time PNG has had to postpone classes due to post-hurricane power outages this year, with Hurricane Laura knocking out power just days after the first day of classes in August.
Over 65,000 homes in Texas are still without power as of Sunday morning, according to a 9 a.m. update from Entergy, with about 40% of overall outages restored from the peak outage number of over 100,000.
As of 6 a.m., over 1,600 workers including company employees, contractors and mutual aid resources were activated to quickly restore power, according to Entergy.
Beaumont ISD has sent out a survey to parents and students, asking about the extent of damage and power availability.
“Currently, Beaumont ISD is assessing the power conditions of all campuses and facilities after our Hurricane Delta weather event,” a message sent to parents said. “Shortly, you will receive a survey about impact to your residence. This will also be used in the assessment for a return to school on Monday.”
More information on whether school will resume Monday is expected sometime Sunday.
West Orange Cove CISD will reopen as scheduled Monday.
