Photos deleted from iPhone by mistake — are they gone for good?

Q: I recently deleted some photos from my iPhone by mistake. Is there any way I can recover them? I don’t use iCloud and I don’t have any backups.

A: There have been a number of occasions where I was a little too quick to delete a photo from my phone. And even if I were using iCloud, it wouldn’t have helped because the photos were recently taken and never would have had a chance to synchronize with an iCloud account.

Fortunately, Apple knows these things can happen, and it has added an in the Photo app for just such an emergency.

The album is called, cryptically enough, Recently Deleted, and it keeps a copy of your deleted photos for 30 days.

To access it, open the Photos app and tap on Albums at the bottom of the screen. From here, scroll down, and you will see it as the last item below Other Albums.

SLOW MOTION: Older iPad is bogging down

Each deleted photo will show you how many days you have left before it is gone forever.

To recover the photos you want, just tap them and then tap Recover, and the image will go back to your camera roll.

You can also clear up some space on your phone by deleting any of these images from this location immediately. But unless you are strapped for storage, you might want to just things as they are.

Q: Recently I’ve had trouble printing files from Acrobat Reader DC. I don’t think it is a problem with my printer because it prints my email and other documents just fine. When I click Print while viewing a PDF file, the computer brings up the Save file window and the printer does nothing. How do I fix this?

A: Any program you use that has the option to print will offer you a choice of how and where to print the document. Most of the time it will default to your main printer. But sometimes it will not.

In this case, it sounds like Adobe Acrobat Reader is set to print the document, not to a printer, but as a PDF file.

If you change the setting in the printer dialog away from Adobe PDF and to the printer, it should take care of this problem. It should also default to your printer the next time you open the application.

It is worth noting that printing to a PDF file is a useful bit of functionality. While some applications will allow you to directly save a document as a PDF file, some will not. Applications like Internet Explorer or Outlook don’t really offer a Save As option, but will let you print, and if you choose Save To PDF as your printer, it will output the data to a PDF file.
