Pedestrian dies in apparent hit-and-run crash in Riverside – Press Enterprise


A pedestrian died in Riverside after being struck by a car that fled the scene on Monday evening, officials said.

Hector Cardenas, 31, of Ontario was identified as the victim of the hit-and-run crash. He was pronounced deceased at 7:54 p.m., according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.

The Riverside Fire Department responded to a reported vehicle vs. pedestrian crash at the intersection of Jurupa Avenue and Essex Street at 7:45 p.m. The Fire Department crew found Cardenas down in the roadway.

A preliminary investigation revealed a silver Subaru Impreza was traveling westbound on Jurupa, west of Florence Street, the Riverside Police Department reported. The pedestrian was allegedly lying and standing in the roadway in the path of oncoming traffic and was struck by the vehicle in the westbound lanes of Jurupa, according to witness reports.

After the collision, the Subaru fled the scene westbound towards Van Buren Boulevard, police said.

Jurupa was closed to all traffic between Essex and Florence streets for the investigation, the Fire Department reported.
