OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G Review: Slinky yet Power Packed

The OPPO Reno4 Pro was one of the best-looking smartphones we tested in 2020. At a time when smartphones have become clunkier with larger screens and batteries that need to power these displays, the Reno4 Pro was a breath of fresh air with its ultra-light form. The Reno5 Pro takes up the baton from the 4 Pro; thankfully it borrows some of the best features of its predecessor. But does it address some of the perceived shortcomings of the 2020 flagship? Read on.

The Astral Blue color variant (that we checked out) is one of the coolest blues you can find on any smartphone. OPPO calls it Reno Glow, an etching technology that achieves a shiny effect inspired by the sparkle of a starry sky. It’s quite gorgeous and also repels fingerprints. At 7.6 mm, it’s incredibly thin and a touch thinner than its predecessor. It weighs 12 gms more than the 4 Pro but I couldn’t tell the difference. The marginal increase can also be attributed to a more robust battery – the 4350 mAh battery in the 5 Pro that is also backed by
OPPO’s proprietary ultra-fast SuperVOOC 65W – 0 to 100% in just 30 minutes. At 173 gm, it’s still one of the lightest large-screen flagships you can buy now.

I enjoyed using the fluidic display of the Reno4 Pro. The 5 Pro features an identical 3D Borderless Sense screen with an impressive screen: body ratio of 92.1%. The Super AMOLED display (1080 x 2400 pixels / 402 PPI) features a 90Hz refresh rate, it would have been nice to see OPPO up this to 120Hz especially given that quite a few competing devices now offer this feature. All the same, this is an immersive display, great for HD videos and
gaming. The 5 Pro misses out on stereo speakers though.

Staying with gaming, the Reno5 Pro 5G becomes the first smartphone in India with the new MediaTek Dimensity 1000+ Processor under the hood. It teams up with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of Internal memory. It’s clearly enough firepower, the device clocked an impressive 3059 on our Geekbench (multi-core score) test, a big leap over the 4 Pro. The choice of processor addresses one of our major cribs about the 4 Pro that felt slightly underpowered for heavy duty tasks.

The rear cam module is integrated very seamlessly. In terms of the set up its identical to the 4 Pro except for the 64MP primary lens. You get the same 8MP ultra-wide lens, 2MP macro lens and 2MP depth or mono sensor. Lowlight images were impressive in our tests. You also get a tonne of video and image options including the dual-view video that tells both sides of the story, the Monochrome video that allows you to highlight blues, greens or reds and a handy Ultra Night video mode that shoots clearer videos in lowlight.

The OPPO Reno5 Pro 5G makes some key improvisations over last year’s 4 Pro. The new processor makes it more zippy while the improved battery and new 64MP lens in the quad cam give it an edge. While OPPO’s Color OS (this device features the newest iteration – 11.1, that’s built on Android 11) has improved it’s still too busy for our liking; there are also quite a few pre-loaded Apps that you might not need. These are minor cribs in a device that scores with its design and slinky form.
