HIGHLIGHTS

  • Xiaomi plans to stop making 4G smartphones from next year.
  • The company will solely focus on 5G smartphones.
  • We can expect more affordable 5G smartphones in India too.

If you look at all of Xiaomi’s smartphone launches in China, it is evident that the company wants to push 5G smartphones and make the technology more accessible. The recently launched Redmi 10X series is primarily a 5G smartphone series while the Redmi K30 series also got a more affordable 5G variant in the form of the Redmi K30i. While this is limited to China as of now, you may soon see only 5G smartphones from Xiaomi for all other markets.

In a recent report from Gizmochina, Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun said in an interview to Xinhua that the company is going to focus more on 5G smartphones and moving forward to 2021, Xiaomi will stop manufacturing 4G smartphones The 5G push was supposed to happen at a faster rate but the COVID-19 pandemic dampened all the efforts.

Lei Jun says that 5G is going to revolutionise the smartphone industry and with the faster connectivity, it will enable activities like 4K/8K video conferencing, cloud gaming, and auto-pilot.

Xiaomi’s push for 5G seems legit given that its home market has already started seeing 5G networks massively. Some European markets, as well as the US markets, have also moved on to 5G networks. For other major global markets, 5G is yet to be present. For example, India is yet to see 5G networks and it seems it could take up to 2022 to see the first 5G networks go live.

Moreover, 5G based chips from Qualcomm and MediaTek could be cheaper for smartphone manufacturers to adopt globally in the coming months. MediaTek’s Dimensity 820 chipset has already proven that with the Redmi 10X series and in the months to come, we can expect more affordable 5G smartphones with cheaper 5G chips from both MediaTek and Qualcomm.

Currently in India, the only 5G smartphone Xiaomi sells is the Mi 10 and that uses a Snapdragon 865, which is bundled with the Snapdragon X55 5G modem. India is yet to see phones with affordable 5G chips but in the coming months, we may see phones using the Snapdragon 765G chipset as well as the MediaTek Dimensity 820 chipset.

In the interview, Lei Jun also said that Xiaomi has also begun pre-research on 6G technology as well as Satellite Internet technology.
