Man charged over drone smuggling operation of phones and cocaine at Ireland’s maximum security Portlaoise Prison


A MAN has been charged in connection to a smuggling operation at Ireland’s maximum security Portlaoise Prison.

The man in his 20s was arrested following the seizure of a drone along with a package containing mobile phones, chargers and quantities of crack cocaine, cocaine and cannabis.

The haul has a combined estimated value of €5,000.

The discovery was made at St Johns’ Square near Portlaoise Prison as part of an ongoing investigation by the Laois Offaly Divisional Drugs Unit at around 4pm on Wednesday January 6.

Two cars were also seized by investigating Gardaí during the operation.

The man is due to appear before Naas District Court this morning, 8th January 2021.

Investigations are ongoing.

A garda spokesman said: “The man, aged in his 20s, who was arrested in connection with this seizure in Portlaoise on Wednesday 6th January 2021 has been charged and is due to appear before Naas District Court this morning, 8th January 2021.”
