Man arrested for stealing mobile phones from mosques | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: A man who allegedly stole valuables from people while they offered prayers at mosques was arrested on Thursday.

The accused, Mohammad Israr Yunus Khan, had stolen five cellphones worth Rs 95,000 in separate instances from Kandivli and one from a mosque in Kurla, said an official from Kandivli police station. His aide, Guddu Ansari, who bought the stolen phones from Khan, has also been arrested.

On January 5, Farhan Talojkar had gone to a mosque in Kandivli (west) to pray. Later, he couldn’t find his bag which contained his phone besides other belongings. Talojkar lodged a police complaint.

“We went through CCTV footage of the mosque and noticed a man moving about suspiciously with Talojkar’s bag,” said investigating officer Sandeep Pachangne.

The police made inquiries about the suspect (Khan) and traced his residence to Dharavi. A magistrate’s court sent Khan to police custody for a day.

During investigation, the police found that he had also been involved in a theft at a mosque in Kurla. “Khan used to go to mosques on the pretext of praying. He would keep a watch on people praying and steal bags kept a distance from the praying mat,” said a police officer.
