The Pittsfield American Little League All-Stars weren’t going to be denied, Saturday afternoon.
The defending Massachusetts Section 1 champion made it back-to-back sectional titles as it recorded 19 hits against Leominster pitching and notched a 15-12 victory in the championship game of the Section 1 Little League Tournament at Deming Field.
District 1 champion Pittsfield, who needed a pair of wins against Leominster in the last two days, advances to the state tournament beginning next week in Braintree.
As for Leominster, the Massachusetts District 3 front runners, it’s summer season officially comes to an end.
Pittsfield scored runs in every inning but the sixth, opening a 9-1 lead after two-and-a-half innings against Leominster starting pitcher Ricco Lora.
Leominster scored four runs in the home half of the third to close to within 9-5, before Pittsfield answered with three more runs in the top of the third to take a 12-5 advantage.
Leominster refused to go quietly however, trailing 15-7 entering the bottom of the fifth. They plated a single run to pull within 15-8 and made things interesting with four more in the last of the sixth.
Pittsfield was able to escape the inning with the lead, however, to secure the victory.
Brandon Merwin picked up the victory for Pittsfield, while Lora was charged with the loss. Leominster’s Mason Laundry and Ayden Courchaine also saw time on the mound, Saturday afternoon.
Despite the loss, Leominster recorded 14 hits in the ballgame. The offense was led by Lora (4-for-4), Jackson Mazzaferro (3-for-4, two RBI), Vitto Piermarini (1-for-2, HR, four RBI), Davin Hjelm (2-for-3, RBI) and Michael Thompson (1-for-4, two RBI).
