    What is it?

Kobo’s most affordable e-reader has a six-inch screen that’s easy to see both during the day and night thanks to the built-in light. It has 8GB of storage space (around 6,000 books) and a battery that lasts for weeks.

    GHI expert verdict

This is the most affordable way you can access ebooks from public libraries directly from an e-reader. It’s simple to use, but the bookstore lacks some best sellers.

    The good

This e-reader is compact, lightweight and fast – there’s no lag when turning pages, accessing menus or downloading books, which are downloaded from Kobo’s ebook store of more than six million titles.

At the time of testing, every author from the top 30 fiction chart was available. It also has OverDrive built-in, so you can rent e-books from your public library straight to the e-reader. The battery only went down by 50% when reading for an hour every day for a week and it was quick to recharge, taking under two hours.

    Take note

It’s not waterproof and doesn’t have physical buttons for page turns. The brightness of the screen doesn’t adjust automatically to suit your surroundings and it won’t reduce the amount of blue light emitted either, which can hamper sleep.

      How we test

We assess e-readers on their performance, ease of use, setup process and design. We review everything from how well it reproduces the printed word to whether the battery life will get you through War and Peace. We look at any extra features, such as web browsers, and peruse the relevant bookstores, checking for the top 10 books at the time of testing, as well as all the classics.
