Kids learning coding through video games

Tulsa has made it onto a list of up and coming tech spots in the country.

The list was compiled by a national real estate services company, CBRE.

The Zone Academy is a place where gaming is used to teach a host of skills, including coding and teamwork.

With their parents permission, kids can visit The Zone Academy online and play games like Zone Craft, a game similar to Minecraft.

Kujanga Jackson with The Zone Academy tells us, “we’ve recreated the zone so it doesn’t matter where a student is in our city on our country anywhere around they world, they can walk into this building as an avatar”

Zone Craft launches on August 3rd, and students will create a game with a story line detailing how life is different with COVID-19.

As kids play the game, the lessons for coding get progressively harder.

The lessons go all the way up to college level coding.

Jackson says, “we are bringing in career paths because a lot of kids like to play video games but what they don’t understand or recognize is that there are career paths that are tied to those games. As they write the code in they have to run their code and when they run their code, that’s the opportunity to see if they wrote their code correctly”

David Harris’ daughter Aliah is a student of The Zone Academy, Harris tells us, “it’s not just playing a game its bigger than the gam. They are becoming those who develop the game, those who test the game, and those who learn all of these different areas of career paths and entrepreneurship opportunities.”
