Keeping phones virus-free | The Star Online

WHILE you are busy washing your hands, do not forget to sanitise your mobile phone as well.

Medical experts have warned of the risk of transmitting infection when the phone is in contact with the face.

“When our mobile phone rings, we hold it up to our face and start talking.

“We use the same hand when we are out in public to touch common surfaces and areas like elevator buttons, door knobs, hand railing, trolley handles and even food menus, ” said community pharmacist Lim Lip Jinn.

He, however, urged the public not to develop unnecessary phobias towards their mobile phones.

Lim recommended taking simple steps to regularly clean the device with wet wipes, alcohol-based sanitiser or a wet towel.

“It is safe to use wet wipes and alcohol-based sanitiser to wipe the phone.

“This is the quickest and easiest way to clean your phone as the moisture evaporates quickly.

“Towels washed with water and detergent can also be used to clean phones if commercial disinfectants are not available, ” said Lim.

Former Penang health exco member Dr Afif Bahardin, who is a doctor, said sanitation efforts should not only be limited to mobile phones.

“We must clean all objects that may have been exposed to the virus.

“Maintaining good personal hygiene is most important to reduce the risk of infection.

“Those who need to go out of their homes should isolate themselves and clean up immediately upon returning home.

“They should do this before going to interact with their family members.

“Unnecessary exposure can be reduced through proper planning.”

He also urged the people to limit their trips outside.

“More time at home and less time outside will help reduce the risk of transmission, ” said Dr Afif.
