Long term investing can be life changing when you buy and hold the truly great businesses. And we’ve seen some truly amazing gains over the years. Just think about the savvy investors who held Bio-Techne Corporation (NASDAQ:TECH) shares for the last five years, while they gained 322%. And this is just one example of the epic gains achieved by some long term investors. It’s also up 8.7% in about a month.

To quote Buffett, ‘Ships will sail around the world but the Flat Earth Society will flourish. There will continue to be wide discrepancies between price and value in the marketplace…’ By comparing earnings per share (EPS) and share price changes over time, we can get a feel for how investor attitudes to a company have morphed over time.

During five years of share price growth, Bio-Techne achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 11% per year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 33% per year, over the same period. So it’s fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. And that’s hardly shocking given the track record of growth. This favorable sentiment is reflected in its (fairly optimistic) P/E ratio of 99.44.

What About Dividends?

It is important to consider the total shareholder return, as well as the share price return, for any given stock. The TSR incorporates the value of any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings, along with any dividends, based on the assumption that the dividends are reinvested. Arguably, the TSR gives a more comprehensive picture of the return generated by a stock. We note that for Bio-Techne the TSR over the last 5 years was 339%, which is better than the share price return mentioned above. The dividends paid by the company have thusly boosted the total shareholder return.

A Different Perspective

We’re pleased to report that Bio-Techne shareholders have received a total shareholder return of 76% over one year. That’s including the dividend. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 34% per year), it would seem that the stock’s performance has improved in recent times. Given the share price momentum remains strong, it might be worth taking a closer look at the stock, lest you miss an opportunity. It’s always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Bio-Techne better, we need to consider many other factors. Take risks, for example – Bio-Techne has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.
