HYUNDAI says it is “preparing for the future” as it launches new James Bond-style tyre tech to give drivers more grip in the snow.
The Korean manufacturer is set to produce an all-in-one smart tyre that can handle conditions all year round.

The brand’s new “Shape Memory Alloy Integrated Snow Chain” will allow drivers to tackle low-grip roads by effectively building a retractable snow chain into the rubber.
Using a collection of J-shaped metal roads within the wheel and bars running across the tread, they will provide better traction in the same way as dedicated winter tyres.
The ‘chain’ will be retractable, meaning motorists can switch from summer to winter mode at a moment’s notice when transitioning from one surface to the next.
The theory is that drivers will be able to push a dashboard button which will send an electrical signal through the rod, causing it to contract and raise the grip bars.
Then a second press will halt the signal, allowing the bars to extend, with the “shape memory” metal springing back exactly into its original position
Not only could this save you hundreds on specialist tyres and chains, but it also saves the potential hours of work it takes to fit them.
Those living in the coldest countries are set to benefit most, particularly in places like Germany and Sweden where winter tyres are a legal requirement for much of the year.
Joon Mo Park, Hyundai’s Head of Advanced Chassis Development, confirmed that they will look to bring the gadget to all the brand’s models as well as those of sister company Kia.
He said: “This innovation, which will hopefully be introduced on Hyundai and Kia vehicles someday, reflects our commitment to turning advanced technologies into real-world solutions that benefit customers.
“We will continue to develop technologies that enhance safety and convenience of our vehicles and bring value to our customers.”
It comes after EV drivers were given an urgent warning about freezing conditions as one mechanic claimed the vehicles “aren’t made for the cold”.
