The Trojans lead most of the way in starting the season with a 69-53 victory over Durfee on Friday night.

BRIDGEWATER – Not bad for starters.

The Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School boys’ basketball team tipped off its 2018-2019 season with a 69-53 win over Durfee at the Monti Gymnasium on Friday night.

Senior Connor Rubenskas led the way with 25 points, 13 in the third quarter when the Trojans pulled away for the win.

Senior Jack Armstrong had 12 points and junior Ryan Rubenskas 10 for B-R.

Seniors Quimani Neal and Ty Lopes led the Hilltoppers with 14 and 13 points, respectively, all 14 of Neal’s points coming in the first half.

Powered by an 11-0 run, the Trojans led, 16-11, at the end of the first quarter, one that saw Ryan Rubenskas lead the way with six points and Armstrong back him with five.

A couple of baskets by junior forward Karl Akiens to open the second quarter quickly expanded B-R’s lead to nine, but the Hilltoppers responded with the next eight points to cut it to one (20-19), Lopes opening and closing that surge with hoops.

A basket by sophomore Tyren Gilliard on a dishoff from Neal gave Durfee its first lead since 5-4 at 27-26 with 2:03 to play in the second quarter, but B-R responded by closing the half with a 9-3 burst that featured four points by Connor Rubenskas (11 in the half) and a 3-pointer by senior Jack Revil restored the Trojans’ five-point first-quarter lead, 35-30, at the break.

Riding a flurry of 3-pointers – three by Connor Rubenskas and one each by Armstrong and senior Sam Murphy – B-R pulled away to an 18-point lead, 51-33, going on to outscore Durfee in the quarter, 25-11, for a 60-41 lead.

After Lopes opened the fourth quarter with a free throw, a tip-in by Armstrong with 6:22 to play got the lead to 20 (62-42)

The Hilltoppers wouldn’t get any closer than 13 the rest of the way, that occurring when senior Nilin Nehra scored a hoop to make it 66-53 late in the game.
