Won’t it be exciting if your first product in a category puts you in one of the global top spots? Well, it seems like the Pixel Watch is a hit because it has put Google right at the number two spot in the worldwide wearables market. It has zoomed past the likes of Samsung, Huawei, and Xiaomi, and trails only behind the Cupertino-based tech giant Apple.
According to a new report by Canalys, Google captured the No. 2 spot for worldwide wearable band market share in Q4 2022. Google was placed 2nd in the ‘wearable band’ market category. This includes smartwatches, basic watches, and basic bands from all the big tech companies. Notably, Google managed to capture 8% of the wearables market share with its Pixel Watch in Q4 2022. Compared to this, Apple has a dominant 27.5% market share, while Samsung has a 5.9% share and is placed 5th on the list.
Google is selling its Pixel Watch in only 9 countries, whereas Apple Watch is sold in over 60 countries
Canalys also mentions that 16% of smartwatch growth happened with the release of its Pixel Watch, which catapulted Google to the No. 2 position in the worldwide wearables market. Some might say that it isn’t the Pixel Watch Google’s first product, and the numbers should be from 0 units. Well, no. Because Google also owns product lines such as Fitbit Sense, Versa, and Inspire, which are cumulatively added to Google’s portfolio.
As per the report, Google shipped 880,000 Pixel Watches during Q4 2022, which is collectively 22 percent of Google’s 4 million wearables shipments. However, sales under Google for Fitbit are a disaster, and shipments went down for the brand by 25% YoY, all thanks to weak Fitbit shipments. Coming back to Google, zooming past behemoths like Samsung is a nice feat, as the latter has been in the game for quite some time.
Moreover, Google sells its Pixel Watch in only nine countries, while the leader Apple is solid in over 60 countries. Samsung sells its Galaxy Watches in at least 31 countries. So, the numbers are outstanding, keeping the presence of watches from Google in perspective.
