Jalandhar: In recognition of 15-year-old Kusum’s courageous act, when two bike-borne youths tried to snatch her mobile phone on August 30 but she managed to catch hold of one of them despite serious wrist injury in the attack, Jalandhar commissioner of police (CP) Gurpreet Singh Bhullar on Monday felicitated the brave girl with a smartphone and a commendation certificate.
Bhullar invited Kusum, along with her parents, over a cup of tea at the police lines and praised her valour. He said Kusum has become an idol for other girls and made the society proud. He said a US-based philanthropist had also decided to give her a Rs 51,000 reward, for which her account number has been given to him.
The new smartphone was gifted to her as she had said after the incident that her father had laboured hard to purchase a smartphone for her, so that she could attend the online classes. She had said she could not afford to lose her phone, so did not blink before chasing and pouncing upon one of the robbers and pulling him down.
The incident was caught in CCTVs and went viral on social media.
Kusum was passing through a street when a youth snatched her phone and tried to escape on a bike, which was kept ready by his accomplice. However, she pounced upon the pillion rider and pulled him down. The accused even attacked with a sharp-edged weapon on her wrist, but she still did not leave him. By that time, a few neighbours had also rushed and overpowered the accused.
The arrested, Avinash, was already facing seven cases and had come out of jail on bail due to corona relaxations. The other accused, who managed to flee, has also been identified and booked.
