German companies struggle to apply artificial intelligence: Bitkom – Xinhua

BERLIN, June 8 (Xinhua) — A survey published by the German digital association Bitkom on Monday said 73 percent of German companies with 20 or more employees considered artificial intelligence (AI) the most important future technology.

However, only six percent of German companies used AI in their own businesses, while every fifth company was planning to use AI or was discussing the topic, according to the survey conducted among more than 600 companies.

A year ago, the figures were “significantly lower.” Only two percent of German companies were using AI and nine percent were planning or discussing the topic, Bitkom noted.

“There is a broad consensus within companies about the outstanding importance of technology for the sustainability of our economy,” said Bitkom President Achim Berg. “But the majority is struggling to use this knowledge for their own business.”

According to the survey, 28 percent saw AI as a threat to their own company, while 55 percent of companies saw AI primarily as an opportunity for their business.

However, a majority of companies in Germany had so far not invested in AI and had no plans to invest. The managers surveyed cited lack of time as the main reasons for the reluctance to invest and the fact that there was no one in the company to deal with the issue, according to the survey.

Last week, the German government agreed on an economic stimulus package to mitigate the effects of the coronavirus crisis. The package also included the promotion of digitalization, for example, in research on artificial intelligence.

“We are living in a time in which the way we do business is undergoing fundamental changes,” partly due to the digitalization of our society, said German Chancellor Angela Merkel on Saturday during her weekly podcast. Enditem
