As gas prices continue to rise in the world, many wonder if there are other alternatives to fossil fuels. Tesla and other all-electric car manufacturers are already trying to answer the need for improved emissions, lower energy costs, and a better environment, but is there an even better way?

While air is partly responsible for how the internal combustion engine works, it still requires fuel to be burned. This creates the energy to move the pistons, which then translates to moving the wheels.

There’s more to it than that, but the basic principle is there. What makes the Compressed Air Car different is that it does not require any fuel. By compressing air into a tank, the stored air will release which can then move the pistons, driveshaft, and then the wheels.

Pros of The Compressed Air Car

The main benefit of the compressed car is that it produced absolutely no pollution from its tailpipes. There is no fuel being burning to move the pistons in the engines, so this is one of the cleanest cars in theory.

Because compressed air cars are designed to be extremely lightweight, they will be able to travel much further on less energy. Since the compressed air tank will be the main source of fuel in this car, filling the tank will be extremely cost-effective.

If you have ever worked with compressed air, you’ll know that the compressors are not very expensive to run. With much less pollution and cheaper running costs, the Compressed Air Car seems like a real possibility for the future.

Cons of The Compressed Air Car

The Compressed Air Car does produce a lot of potential benefits, but there are just as many drawbacks to this technology. The first is speed. The Compressed Air Car can only achieve speeds of about 35 mph, which is simply not fast enough for most consumers who need at least 60MPH.

In order for the Compressed Air Car to be a viable solution, it would need some type of internal combustion engine or electric hybrid system to be implemented at high speeds. While this would still be more efficient, it still would cause pollution.

Then there is the issue of refilling the tanks. You could have an air compressor in the car, but that would require some type of fuel source, whether it be fossil fuels, hydrogen, or an electric motor.

If you just had the compressed air tank in the car, you would have to implement some type of fueling station network that could speed up the process with high pressure air pumps to fuel up your air tanks. Refueling the compressed air at home could take several hours, which isn’t bad when compared to recharging an electric vehicle overnight.

The Compressed Air Car seems like a great idea in theory, but the implementation probably would not work in its current form. People want performance and convenience for their transportation. Until the technology improves, consumers are more likely to buy fully electric, hybrid, or just stick to their internal combustion engine vehicles.

Although there is much excitement regarding Compressed Air Cars, there are only a handful of cars that might see the light of day. Zero Pollution Motors has created the AIRPod 2.0 Compressed Air-Powered Car. This seems to be the most famous Compressed Air Car on the market.

With a price of just over $10,000, The AIRPod could be an excellent alternative to more expensive fully electric vehicles.

The AIRPod is able to achieve city speeds of about 20-30 mph with a range of around 100 miles per compressed air tank. In order to refill the tank, you can take the car to a gas station air compressor and refill it in three minutes.

Other Clean Fuel Source Cars

While the Compressed Air Car is a neat idea, it may not have the practical applications and convenience that people want in their daily lives. Here are a couple of clean fuel source alternatives that offer a little more power, luxury, and overall practicality. Electric cars do have a huge advantage over compressed air cars, especially regarding performance. Vehicles like the Tesla Model 3 and Ford Mustang Mach-E are zero-emission vehicles when running, but they still have a decent carbon footprint.

Not only will you need to burn fossil fuels to charge the batteries(unless you have solar panels), but there’s also the issue with the creation and maintenance of batteries. Once the batteries die, they need to be disposed of properly. The chemicals in the batteries are highly toxic and polluting.

However, people tend to overlook the environmental issues of using batteries in electric cars since the Tesla Model 3 became Europe’s best-selling EV in 2021.

Toyota Mirai Hydrogen Car

Hydrogen Fuel Cells are another clean fuel source that has been getting some publicist as of late. The reason being is the release of the Toyota Mirai. The sedan is powered by an eclectic motor containing hydrogen fuel cells as its main source of power.

The main advantage of this technology is that the only waste from the system is water. Unfortunately, there are not enough refueling stations to make this a viable option at the moment. If the infrastructure can catch up, it could be a solid alternative.
