Edwards to face Winona tonight, playoffs likely

The good news is that a 3A playoff berth seems very likely for the Thomas Edwards High football team.

However, with their final regular season game to be played tonight, the 2-6, 1-2 Tigers will play host to the Region 3-3A top-ranked team.

Playing their rare Thursday game at 7 p.m., the Tigers will take on the 7-1 Winona High Tigers.

“They are a pretty good team and are disciplined,” said Edwards High Head Coach Demaris Mitchell.

Last week, the Winona High version of Tigers defeated Amanda Elzy High of Greenwood by a 42-20 margin.

Averaging over 43 points per game, the Winona squad’s only loss this year was against an out-of-state opponent from Alexandria, Louisiana.

Historically, Edwards High has never played Winona High in a football game.

In their most recent action last Friday night, while their school was celebrating Homecoming, the Tigers from Ruleville dropped a 25-6 decision to visiting Yazoo County High School.

Battling the Panthers to a 6-6 halftime score, the game turned for the worst.

According to Coach Mitchell “We just made too many mistakes. We had a good first half that was followed by a bad third quarter and too many missed opportunities.”

When all was said and done, it was a six yard touchdown run by Ja’Kell Allen which staved off a shutout of the Tigers.
