Poway, CA (CNS) – A 23-year-old man was killed in a three-vehicle car accident on National Highway 67 south of Poway on Friday, injuring two others.
The clash was first reported on SR-67 and Lazy Acres Drive after 1:00 pm, a California Highway Patrol official said.
Officer Travis Gallow said in writing that the victims who died were residents of Lakeside.
The man was driving the Honda Accord north on SR-67, south of the Scrip Spoway Parkway, as he tried to pass the big rig. A 44-year-old Lakeside woman drove and a Toyota Highlander carrying a 19-year-old female passenger headed south.
For unknown reasons, the 23-year-old driver “crashed into the Freightliner and both drivers lost control of the vehicle,” Gallow said. “Honda went out of control and moved to the southbound lane, where it hit Toyota.”
The CHP did not indicate the number of lanes in that series of lanes, and it was unclear whether Honda crossed the oncoming lane in an attempt to pass a large rig.
He said the three vehicles left the road and went down the dirt embankment, but all the occupants were thought to have buckled.
Nevertheless, Honda’s driver was seriously injured and was taken to Escondido’s Palomar Medical Center, where he was sentenced to death, Gallow said. His name was put on hold until the family was notified.
Toyota drivers were seriously injured, passengers were moderately injured, and both were transferred to the Palomar Medical Center, but their condition was not immediately known.
The truck driver was unharmed. It was not immediately clear whether drugs or alcohol were the cause of the conflict.
The roadway was closed for several hours as the CHP conducted an investigation. Shortly before 5:30 pm, Caltrans announced that it had resumed one in each direction.
