Deathloop is a ‘game of the year’ contender

Deathloop looks to be a ‘game of the year’ contender, as first reviews for the title have been glowing.

From Dishonored studio Arkane Studios, the first-person shooter centres on an assassin named Colt who is stuck in a time loop on an island. To break the loop, he must take out eight targets before the night is over.

The game, which currently has a Metacritic score of 88, is out on PlayStation 5 as a timed console exclusive, as well as on PC.

Reviewers praised Deathloop as a stylish, confident, and “genius” game, with its mechanics including its implementation of the time loops providing an abundance of satisfying and rewarding thrills.

On social media, Alanah Pearce described it as one of her favourite games in recent years “in terms of both style and concept”.

Deathloop is available to buy from retailers such as Amazon, GAME, Very.co.uk, and Argos.

Check out some of the verdicts below:

GameSpot (Tamoor Hussain):

Deathloop is a game where observation and dynamic thinking go hand-in-hand with shotgunning goons in the face and snapping their necks; where throwing a grenade into a soiree for sycophants counts as the right kind of experimentation and derring-do. It delivers bombastic thrills and wince-inducing kills with intelligence and elegance in equal measure.” – 10/10

VG247 (Alex Donaldson):

Deathloop is everything I wanted it to be. It’s confident both as a successor to many of the ideas of Dishonored while also expressly its own thing, with a tone and sense of style I absolutely adore. It’s one of my favourite games of the year – and one we’ll surely be talking about for months to come.” – 5/5

IGN (Matt Purslow):

“Despite its seemingly endless complexities, Deathloop is one of the most confidently designed games I’ve ever played… Its unique, high-concept ideas around time loops and non-linear investigation work are implemented with elegance, making its systems feel effortless to navigate, learn from, and ultimately master. A new high watermark for Arkane and developers of similar games to aspire to, Deathloop is a game like no other.” – 10/10

Polygon (Tauriq Moosa):

“All this time manipulation is utterly genius, and it makes me feel like a genius. Arkane Studios has made a game about time management one of the most rewarding experiences I’ve ever encountered.”

GamesRadar+ (Josh West):

“I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Deathloop. It wasn’t what I thought it was going to be and it seemed to challenge my expectations without reservation… As a result, it’s difficult to not be impressed – if not thoroughly enthralled – with what Arkane has pieced together here. It’s different, it’s stylish, it’s new. You won’t play anything else quite like Deathloop for a very long time.” – 4.5/5

Deathloop is out now on PlayStation 5 and PC.
