Chevy’s Electric Silverado RST First Edition Sold Out In 12 Minutes Proving That EV Pickups Are In Demand

Automakers are increasingly using a marketing technique that says a model that hasn’t been launched yet, usually a limited-run launch version, sells out quickly. Recently, many carmakers have used this trick, especially for upcoming electric cars and General Motors is no exception.

The unveiling of the Silverado EV at CES 2022 was one of the most significant Chevrolet announcements. The Bo-tie brand declared that there would be numerous trim levels, but the RST First Edition will be the foremost Silverado EV. The First Edition will have every option imaginable and come with a hefty price tag.

In an interview with Bloomberg, Mary Barra, GM CEO, declared that the Silverado EV First Edition is sold out. Barra claims that all First Edition models sold out in 12 minutes. Chevrolet’s claim is not confirmed, as no one knows the number of First Edition models available. GM intends to commence deliveries of the limited-run truck by fall 2023.

Presumably, some RST First Edition buyers won’t make the investment. It might be more precise to say that all First Edition pickups are reserved and not sold. It is also worth noting that the Silverado Electric vehicle reservations did not mandate any upfront payment. Curious buyers had to pay $100.

The First Edition truck is costly with an MSRP of $105,000 and DFC. When Ford announced it electric F-150, the Lightning pickup. It unlocked reservations but was pushed to withdraw after the demand surpassed availability. Recently, Ford approved that it would double its Lightning production to 150,000 units annually. GM is also processing orders for the Hummer EV pickup. The company has just begun production of the first customer-bound units.

When it announced the Silverado EV, Chevrolet didn’t shy away from the details. GM confirmed that the RST would have a driving range of 400 miles. GM said that desired battery range is available for both RST and Work Truck models. Although it is not clear whether there will be multiple batteries available, it seems likely.

Depending on the options, the RST can tow up to 10,000 lbs and carry 1,300 lbs of payload. The RST models will have an optional Wide Open Watts mode that delivers up to 664 horsepower and more than 780 pound-foot torque. The RST can reach to 60 MPH from standstill in 4.5 seconds with Watts mode activated. The RST and Work Truck models will have an optional 10.2kW power unit to provide power for camping or work sites.

As the RST was sold out in 12 minutes, you should still be hopeful, because the WT model is still in stock. The catch is that these trucks will only be available to fleet customers. GM has not yet released a Silverado WT for consumers. GM is yet to reveal how many RSTs are being produced to meet the demand but expect the company to make enough to satisfy all the unmet demand.

RST starts at $105,000, but the Silverado WT version will be available at $39,000. However, buyers will need to wait until 2024 before purchasing that model. A Trailboss model is also available, but GM did not release any details beyond a brief mention during their video conference.

A significant question is how Chevrolet expects to catch up to Ford, who already has a 12-month head start with its F-150 Lightning.

Barra replies that General Motors already has a lead in the EV race with its Bolt range, which now includes a EUV crossover variant. She also stated that the company is shipping out hummers and soon Cadillac Lyriq would follow them in the next few months. She confirms that the company is confident to be a leader in the EV sphere because of its portfolio’s many electrified products.

As for which of the trucks will be more favored, Ford will probably be the choice, since its F-150 has been the most famous vehicle in the whole country for many years. Those not acquainted with the RST, it has got unique and compelling attributes, including automatic adaptive air suspension, four-wheel steering, a multi-flex tailgate with power release, a 17-inch LCD, and a Super Cruise that works while towing a trailer.

The multi-flex midgate is a compelling feature that permits the truck’s cargo ability to be extended without compromising seating space for the rear passengers. Chevy has also assured that all interpretations of the Silverado EV will feature standard DC fast charging at up to 350 kW.

Once production begins, deliveries will increase exponentially. This is a huge goal for a company that delivered only 26 electric vehicles in Q4 of the last year. They sold 25 units of the Chevy Bolt EV/EUV and a single GM Hummer EV vehicle truck. Nevertheless, anyone would be wrong to underestimate GM’s industrial power.
