Chandigarh, March 15

To enhance the multi-disciplinary approach among students, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has decided to introduce artificial intelligence (AI), early childhood care education and yoga as new subjects in the school curriculum from the 2019-2020 session onward.

Highlighting the importance of the AI, a circular by the board reads: “Artificial intelligence (AI) is being widely recognised to be the power which will fuel the future global digital economy. India’s AI strategy identifies the AI as an opportunity and solution for inclusive economic growth and social development.”

Similarly, considering an upsurge in the prevalence of yoga and early childhood education, the board has decided to introduce yoga and early childhood education as an elective subject for Classes XI and XII from the academic session.

‘Skill subject’ choice

For Class X students, a skill subject may be offered as an additional sixth subject, along with existing five compulsory subjects. If any student fails in any one of the three elective subjects (science, mathematics and social science), then it will be replaced by the skill subject (offered as the VI subject) and the result of Class X will be computed based on best five subjects.

However, if a candidate desires to reappear in a subject, he/she may do it during the compartment exams.

Recently, the board had also integrated art with the teaching and learning process for all academic subjects from Classes I to XII to promote active and experiential learning. The detailed guidelines on it will be released shortly by the board.

AI module from Class VIII onwards

The CBSE stated: “To make India’s generation ‘AI-ready’, the board is introducing the AI as an optional subject for Class IX and X from the 2019-2020 session onward.” The board said the schools might start the AI “inspire module” of 12 hours in Class VIII itself.
