In case you weren’t aware of the searing heat right outside the window, today is likely to be the hottest day of the year so far.

And since we live in Britain not the Sahara, most of us don’t have air conditioning in our homes. Cue a desperate scramble to dig out an old fan and place a rack of ice cubes beneath it.

Thankfully, there’s a lot of cool tech out there – literally.

Plenty of gadgets will help you bring the temperature down to more manageable levels, and we’ve rounded up the best of them.

JML Chillmax Air

The Chillmax Air is a personal air conditioner (Amazon)

This is no mere desktop fan – this little beauty is a personalised air conditioner.

While a top-end personal air con machine will set you back many hundreds, this one can be had for under fifty quid. It’s got a small, 17cm-square boxy design so you can easily stash it away in the cupboard when winter inevitably returns.

Inside is an evaporator that draws water from a 610ml reservoir to create a chilled breeze. It’s quiet and comes with a built-in night light in case you wanted to move it from your work desk to your bedside table.

Be warned, this is a personal machine – so it’ll cool you nicely while you sit at work but it’s not going to turn your entire living room into a fridge any time soon.

TechNiche International Adult HyperKewl Cooling Sport Vest

Soak this vest in water and pull it on for an instant cool down (Amazon)

Who says you need to plug something in to cool yourself down? Why not just strap on a sports vest for instant relief?

This product from TechNiche should do the trick. It works by being soaked in water and absorbing the liquid like a sponge. Slip it on and it cools you down without getting you wet. If you’re wondering where you’ve seen it before – it’s sometimes used by F1 drivers to keep them cool when racing in hot climates.

So there you go, you stay frosty and get to feel like a race driver at the same time. It’s a win-win.

Intsun Mini Handheld USB Misting Fan

This personal cooling fan will also spray you in the face (Amazon)

If you have to venture outside, perhaps for work or some other essential function, then you’re going to want cooling tech you can take with you.

This handheld, USB-powered fan could be the answer.

It weighs a mere 190g and has a built-in battery that’ll last between two and six hours on a single charge. As well as the fan, it holds 20ml of water to shoot out a cooling mist of vapour onto your hot, sweaty face.

There are three different fan speeds to choose from and two different modes of spraying. And coming in at under £20 means it’s not going to break the bank.

Dyson Pure Cool Tower Advanced Technology Air Purifier Fan

If this doesn’t keep you cool, nothing will (Dyson)

Listen, you’re a high-roller. You take household temperature regulation seriously. For you, only the best will do.

That’s why Dyson has made the Pure Cool Tower Advanced Technology Air Purifier Fan which, for £500, will turn your palatial sweatbox into a summertime igloo.

This floor-standing fan is also an air purifier capable of removing 99.95% of ultra-fine particles from the air. Also, this fan will stay reassuringly quiet even when you whack the power up.

It’s got an accompanying smartphone app that’ll let you do things like schedule it to come on or adopt an energy-saving mode for night time.

Stay Cool Ice Towel

This guy looks cool, you could be like him (Prezzybox)

Okay, we know a towel isn’t much of a ‘gadget’ per se, but the benefits are numerous: it doesn’t need recharging, won’t ever glitch on you and doesn’t contain any in-app payments.

All you need to do with the Ice Towel is soak it in water and give it a shake. It also wins the prize for cheapest item on this list at £8.

According to the marketing bumf it stays cool for hours and is perfect for wrapping around your neck in the gym to give you that ‘extra push’.

To be honest, surviving this heat is enough of a workout for us, thanks.
