Artificial intelligence services firm Sidetrade to open new tech hub

The move to GitHub will make lives easier for big data specialists in the machine learning sector, and no doubt provide some useful ecosystem links to the Chinese giant.

Alibaba Cloud has made
the core codes of its Alink data processing platform open-source to
help widen the development opportunities for artificial intelligence
and machine learning.

The algorithm platform has been made available on Microsoft-owned GitHub, the world’s largest developer community. The platform offers a broad range of algorithm libraries that support both batch and stream processing, which is critical for machine learning tasks.

Data analysts and software developers can access the codes on GitHub to build their own software, facilitating tasks such as statistics analysis, machine learning, real-time prediction, personalised recommendation and abnormality detection.

“As a platform that
consists of various algorithms combining learning in various data
processing patterns, Alink can be a valuable option for developers
looking for robust big data and advanced machine learning tools,”
said Yangqing Jia, president of data platforms at Alibaba Cloud
Intelligence.

“As one of the top ten contributors to GitHub, we are committed to connecting with the open source community as early as possible in our software development cycles. Sharing Alink on GitHub underlines our long-held commitment.”

Alink was developed
based on Flink, a unified distributed computing engine. Not only does
it support Alibaba’s proprietary data storage, but also other
open-source data storage offerings such as Kafka, HDFS and HBase.

Alink has been deployed
in various businesses within the Alibaba ecosystem. For example, it
has been used to help increase the click through rate (CTR) of
product recommendations on Alibaba’s e-commerce platform Tmall.

Besides GitHub, Alibaba has also been active in open-source communities including Cloud Native Computing Foundation, Alliance for Open Media, Cloud Foundry, Hyperledger, Open Container Initiative, Continuous Delivery Foundation, The Apache Software Foundation and the MariaDB Foundation.

Arrow Electronics
recently signed an EMEA-wide agreement with Alibaba Cloud to
distribute its full suite of cloud services.

Alibaba Cloud
established its presence in the UK last year with the launch of two
data centres in the London area, adding to its presence in Frankfurt,
Germany where it does business from an ex-Vodafone data centre.

For its last quarter,
Alibaba reported that its cloud revenues had increased by 66%
annually, although still dwarfed by its ecommerce business.
