The vibration engineering optimization of lightweight structures can quickly become so complex that it can no longer be controlled by conventional methods. The Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF develops new methods for the vibration optimization of complex systems based on evolutionary algorithms.

Technical systems are becoming increasingly complex and at the same time are supposed to become ever lighter. In view of these challenges, the vibration optimization of lightweight structures can quickly become so complex that it can no longer be controlled by conventional methods. The solution space becomes very large and different vibration engineering measures interact with each other, which can lead to unexpected effects. The Fraunhofer Institute for Structural Durability and System Reliability LBF is therefore developing new methods for the vibration optimization of complex systems. They are based on evolutionary algorithms and allow a fast and automated solution finding. It is built around an expandable library of various passive, semi-active and active measures, which can also be used in combination.

In order to avoid disturbing or process-critical vibrations, additional vibration engineering measures such as absorbers or dampers are often used. Especially in distributed systems, however, conventional optimization methods reach their limits due to the interactions of the different effects with each other. Based on many years of experience, the scientists at Fraunhofer LBF are able to solve vibration engineering problems from experimental or numerical analysis to the implementation of suitable measures. The use of artificial intelligence now offers the opportunity to arrive at the best solutions even faster. Companies that have vibration-related problems with vibrations, noise or shaking of machines can obtain a complete solution from the Fraunhofer LBF, from the analysis of the problem to its solution.

Automated Vibration Reduction on Machine Tools

The following application example shows how this can be achieved: In machines for machining large components, the workpiece mass has a significant influence on the dynamic behaviour of the machine. In order to avoid disturbing vibrations that influence the component quality, additional vibration control measures such as absorbers, neutralizers or damping components are often implemented. As a rule, these measures must be precisely tailored to the structure or stimulus to be reassured. If this changes, for example due to workpieces of different masses, the tuning must be adjusted. Artificial intelligence together with adaptive vibration control measures can effectively meet this challenge, as the scientists at the Fraunhofer LBF were able to show.

If a machine is equipped with a number of vibration engineering measures, for example adaptive absorbers or machine bearings, a reduced model of the machine and knowledge of the workpiece to be machined can be used to optimally adjust the pre-equipped measures with the developed AI algorithm. In this way, maximum component quality can be achieved from the very first workpiece. For the realization of an automated adjustment of vibration control measures, the Fraunhofer LBF has already implemented various adaptive absorbers and machine mounts in one- and two-dimensions. The three-dimensional implementation is in progress.
