All the Latest Leaks & Rumors on the OnePlus 7 & OnePlus 7 Pro « Smartphones :: Gadget Hacks

As we make our way to summer, we can get excited about two things: warmer weather and the release of the latest OnePlus device. This time around, OnePlus will have a hard act to follow, as the 6T was one of their best phones in years. Based on the latest rumors, they are up to the challenge.

Thanks to a partnership with T-Mobile, the OnePlus 6T is in the hands of millions of Americans who may have previously never even heard of the brand. This is what makes the OnePlus 7 so important. For many, this will be their first time seeing the OnePlus upgrade cycle. If the changes are small or the price too high, they will leave to the bigger OEMs. But if they can make a worthy successor, they will have fans for life and slowly raise their market share in the US.

Standout Features

The OnePlus 7 will have a nearly bezel-less display. The front-facing camera now pops up from the frame, leaving more room for the 6.5-inch screen. The rear cameras have been upgraded to three cameras this time, with the primary camera being a 48 MP sensor. It will continue to use the all-glass design with aluminum frame and will be powered by a huge 4,000 mAh battery.

There is also a Pro version, a first for OnePlus. This will be the first OnePlus device to not sport a 1080p display, instead opting for the industry standard 1440p. It will also have a 90 Hz refresh rate for smoother gaming and overall experience. It will even have dual speakers, another first as well.

Important Dates

OnePlus announced officially that the launch event will be May 14. It will take place in cities spanning four countries: London, UK, New York, US, Bengaluru, India, and Beijing, China. For those wanting to attend, tickets are on sale now.

As for the phone’s release, we’re pretty confident preorders will go live on May 14. Those that preorder should receive their phones within a week, with the phone releasing to the public around May 21.

  • Release date: May 21, 2019
  • Preorder date: May 14, 2019
  • Announcement date: May 14, 2019

Storage Capacity

As we approach the rumored May 7 announcement date, new leaks are emerging for specs we previously knew nothing about. One of which is the storage capacity.

Recent leaks from Max J. indicate that the OnePlus 7 will start at 128 GB, and a higher-tier variant will be available with 256 GB. As with previous OnePlus phones, it will not have expandable storage.

With the OnePlus 7 Pro, storage will also start at 128 GB, and it will be available in a 256 GB variant as well. While we speculated 512 GB storage could be an option, it appears (at least at launch) this won’t be the case. However, OnePlus is differentiating the two versions by giving the 7 Pro UFS 3.0 storage. UFS 3.0 has about two times the bandwidth per lane when compared to UFS 2.1, meaning you can enjoy faster read and write speeds to the internal storage. If this turns out to be accurate, the OnePlus 7 Pro will be the second phone to include the new standard (the other option being the $1,980 Samsung Galaxy Fold).

  • Storage available: 128 GB, 256 GB
  • Standard: UFS 3.0 (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • Expandable storage: no

Price for Everything

OnePlus is conscious of its ever-increasing pricing. Each year, fans see the price of the latest OnePlus phone increase marginally, further shrinking the gap between it and flagship phones of the same year. We expect this year to be no different, with rumored specs including some major upgrades which should require a sizable increase in price.

We speculate that the price will increase between $50–$70 to $629–$649. With the rumored pop-up front-facing camera, triple rear camera array on the back, large battery, and potentially improved in-display fingerprint scanner, there is a little chance OnePlus will be able to go any cheaper while still making a profit.

At this price, it would still be less expensive than almost all other US flagships. We are talking $250–$270 cheaper than the Samsung Galaxy S10, and $50–$80 cheaper than the Nokia 9 PureView with its year-old SoC.

As far as the OnePlus 7 Pro goes, we have a good idea of what it will cost. According to Ishan Agarwal (a reliable leaker), the OnePlus 7 Pro will cost €749 for the 8 GB/256GB model and €819 for the 12 GB/256 GB variant.

Ishan Agarwal stressed in his tweet to not convert this pricing to other currencies, as pricing is affected by region-based factors. But what interesting is that based on its predecessor, we may, in fact, know the US pricing.

The OnePlus 6T debuted last year at €549 in Europe and $549 in the US. If OnePlus follows the same pricing, the OnePlus 7 Pro 8GB/256 GB model will debut at $749 while the highest variant will cost $819.

However, the entry model is the 6 GB/128 GB version. Based on last year’s pricing, it cost consumers $30 to go from 6 GB to 8 GB of RAM and $50 for the higher storage. If pricing holds, this would mean the OnePlus 7 Pro will start at $669.

  • Price: $569–$649 (OnePlus 7), $669, $749, and $819 (OnePlus 7 Pro)

Body

Based on leaked images and previous iterations, we expect OnePlus to continue the all-glass design language from the OnePlus 6T. We already know that the glass back is not an indication of wireless charging, as CEO Pete Lau already confirmed the OnePlus 7 lacks support. However, we do expect an aluminum midframe to add premium feel and durability.

The alert slider is returning, switching to the right edge. Based on leaked images, the OnePlus 7 will also still include a volume rocker and power button (no pressure areas like the HTC U12+).

  • Frame: glass (back and front), aluminum (midframe)
  • Finish: nebula blue, mirror grey, brown

Basics

Rumors have it the OnePlus 7 will be nearly identical to its predecessor, the OnePlus 6T, in regards to its size. According to leaks, it should be the same length, width, and depth as the previous version, making it an easy upgrade for those who enjoy the hand feel of the 6T.

As for the OnePlus 7 Pro, due to the upgraded screen and battery, it is a bit larger in all dimensions. However, despite this marginal change, OnePlus managed to make noticeable improvements to the screen, including increasing the size and removing the notch which is found in the OnePlus 7.

Based on its predecessor, we know the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro will be GSM unlocked and work with AT&T and T-Mobile. After their partnership with T-Mobile, we also expect an official carrier version for the third largest US carrier. Also, because the OnePlus 6T received official certification from Verizon to work on its network, we expect the 7 and 7 Pro to receive the same accreditation.

What’s interesting is OnePlus may be getting full carrier support in the US very soon. According to their job posting, they are looking for Senior Technical Account Manager for Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint (they are actually looking for two people in the position for AT&T, which means that might happen sooner rather than later). And according to the job description:

We are looking for a Senior Technical Account Manager with a deep understanding of carrier product development. The individual should have experience with the overall carrier product approval process, including technical acceptance management, carrier requirement comprehension, 3rd party lab coordination, and device validation management. The individual should be a self-starter who is comfortable working in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.

At the time of this writing, these positions are still being filled, so it is unlikely the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro will have carrier variants for the other three major US wireless carriers, but we might hear an announcement for the OnePlus 7T launch in November. And with the potential launch of 5G in the US, OnePlus might be trying to start strong as the new wave of 5G enabled phones hit the market. For our international readers, they are also looking to fill similar positions in the United Kingdom, Italy, and Germany.

We won’t know specifics as to the non-operating temperature, altitude, and relative humidity ranges of the OnePlus 7 until its official release. However, with most phones operating at the same temperatures, we can make an educated guess it will have the range as not only the 6T but the majority of other smartphones.

  • Operating temp: 32°F –95°F
  • Non-operating temp: Unknown
  • Relative humidity: Unknown
  • Operating altitude: Unknown

Software

Outside of a significant shakeup, you can expect the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro to be running the latest version of Android, 9.0 Pie. With Google I/O just days before, there is a chance that Google opens up the beta for Android 10 (Q) to non-Pixel phones such as the OnePlus 7 as they did last year. While this is speculation, there is a good chance this happens, especially since rumors of a potential beta program have already emerged.

Skin

The OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro will run the latest version of Oxygen OS. At the time of this writing, that’s version 9.0.12. While it should be running v9, it will probably run a newer version than the latest available on the OnePlus 6T, as they will usually include some optimizations for the new hardware.

Display

The OnePlus 7 will have a fairly similar design to the OnePlus 6T. This includes its display, which leaks have indicated will be a 6.2-inch 1080p Optic AMOLED with the same water drop notch as its predecessor. For the real change, you need to look at the OnePlus 7 Pro.

The OnePlus 7 Pro is rumored to have a 6.64-inch Super Optic AMOLED display. It’s also supposed to be curved and notch-less screen, relying on a mechanized popup slider to house the front-facing camera. It will have a 90 Hz refresh rate, making it one of only a handful of phones which offer higher than 60 Hz refresh rate. According to Max J., it is not a fixed 90 Hz panel. Instead, it will change between 60 Hz and 90 Hz. Our guess is it will use 60 Hz for most apps to save on battery but increase to 90 Hz for games which support unlock frame rates (and thanks to Razer Phone 1 and 2, there are a good handful of games which include this option).

And for those who don’t like “Fluid AMOLED” (what OnePlus is calling this variable refresh rate), because it is OnePlus it is likely they will either include a native option in settings to lock the refresh rate or the rooting community will come up with the option.

The OnePlus 7 Pro will also be the first OnePlus phone to break away from the same old 1080p display. It will instead upgrade to a 1440p display (the resolution of most flagships). With the improved resolution, higher refresh rate, and improvements to the screen quality, DisplayMate has already revealed that their panel managed to get A+ Display Rating. This rating is the highest given to smartphone and puts it in the same category as Samsung Galaxy Note 9, Apple iPhone XS Max, and Google Pixel 3 XL.

  • Screen size: 6.2 inches (OnePlus 7), 6.64 inches (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • Screen resolution: 2340 x 1080 (OnePlus 7), 3120 x 1440 (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • Total pixels: 2,527, 200 pixels (OnePlus 7), 4,492,800 pixels (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • Pixel density: 403 ppi (OnePlus 7), 485 ppi (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • Screen type: flat Optic AMOLED (OnePlus 7), curved Super Optic AMOLED (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • Notch: no
  • Screen-to-body ratio: Unknown (OnePlus 7), 95% (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • Aspect ratio: Unknown (OnePlus 7), 19.5:9 (OnePlus 7 Pro)

Performance

The OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro will both use the Snapdragon 855, the latest and greatest SoC from Qualcomm. This SoC uses a 7 nm process which allows it to have significant improvement in power efficiency and performance. It also uses a new three category arrangement with one Gold core having a clock speed of 2.84 GHz (the OnePlus 7 Pro has it slightly overclocked at 2.85 GHz), three Gold cores having a slightly lower clock speed at 2.41 GHz, and four Silver cores at an even lower clock speed of 1.78 GHz. This arrangement allows the SoC to consume less battery, as each category can better address the needs of the user.

Where the OnePlus 7 Pro will see improvement is in the amount of RAM available. Rumors have it the OnePlus 7 Pro will not only offer 6 and 8 GB variants but 12 GB as well. We’ve previously only seen this on the Samsung Galaxy S10+, which will likely be hundreds of dollars higher in price. While this amount of memory is unnecessary for the majority of the population, the extra RAM and high-end SoC will make the 7 Pro future-proof for several years.

Early Geekbench testing of the OnePlus 7 Pro reveals that this device will be a powerhouse. Assuming OnePlus isn’t cheating (a number of OEM have been caught including lines of code which remove any thermal throttling and to run at maximum output whenever a benchmark application is detected including OnePlus), this would put in OnePlus 7 Pro in the top five smartphones, ahead of both the Samsung Galaxy S10+ and the $1980 Samsung Galaxy Fold.

  • Memory: 6 + 8 GB RAM (OnePlus 7), 6 + 8 + 10 + 12 GB RAM (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • Processor: Qualcomm Snapdragon 855
  • Chip size: 7 nanometer
  • CPU frequency: 2.84 GHz (1x Gold), 2.41 GHz (3x Gold), 1.78 GHz (4x Silver) (OnePlus 7), 2.8 GHz (1x Gold), 2.41 GHz (3x Gold), 1.78 GHz (4x Silver) (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • CPU cores: 8 Cores (4 Gold + 4 Silver)
  • GPU: Adreno 640

Battery

Rumors have it that OnePlus 7 Pro will upgrade the battery to 4,000 mAh. What is interesting is that the “regular” OnePlus 7 will actually have a bigger battery at 4,150 mAh. While we are not sure about the reasoning behind this, if this turns out to be true, the OnePlus 7 should claim the title for best battery life in a flagship smartphone in 2019.

CEO Pete Lau already confirmed wireless charging will not be coming to the OnePlus 7. We also know that these will be second OnePlus devices to include the new Warp Charge 30, OnePlus’s new fast-charging system which uses 30 W of power to charge its smartphones rapidly. This system, which debuted with the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition, managed to charge a 3,700 mAh battery to 70% in 30 minutes.

  • Battery: rechargeable lithium-ion
  • Capacity: 4,150 mAh (OnePlus 7), 4,000 mAh (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • Wired charging: yes, Warp Charge 30
  • Wireless charging: no

Front Camera

While the OnePlus 7 will house the front-facing camera in the same notch, the 7 Pro will make a significant change. The OnePlus 7 Pro will use mechanized popup slider which emerges from the frame of the phone whenever an app calls upon the use of the front-facing camera.

This change helps in two major ways. The first is it frees up the display for a notch-less design in the pursuit of an all-screen front face. The second is it provides comfort for privacy-conscious individuals. Instead of your camera always pointing toward you and having to trust the software to protect you from background monitoring, you are now physically protected with the camera tucked safely away when not in use.

Rear Camera

OnePlus is also improving the rear cameras by both increasing the resolution and the number of cameras. Similar to Huawei, OnePlus is using three cameras, with multiple leaks stating the primary sensor will be 48 megapixels. With such a high resolution, the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro will able to capture more details in each photo. There is also a 16 MP second lens and 8 MP third lens.

Rumors indicate that the OnePlus 7 Pro’s cameras will use a similar arrangement to the Huawei Mate 20 Pro, which used a 40 MP main sensor, an 8 MP telephoto lens, and a 20 MP ultra-wide lens. Ultrawide lenses are all the rage in 2019, so it makes sense that the 16 MP camera on the OnePlus 7 Pro will be ultrawide. And just like the Mate 20 Pro, the telephoto lens will be the 8 MP sensor. However, one unique feature is the fact that this lens will provide 3x optical zoom instead of the usual 2x.

Wired was given a near-final version of the phone and praise the higher optical zoom. Unlike like the OnePlus 5 which claim 2x but was actually 1.6x with cropping, this is true 3x zoom. With 3x optical zoom, OnePlus is in rare company, with only Huawei P20 Pro, Mate 20 Pro, and P30 series which also include optical zoom higher than 2x. While zoom isn’t everything, these all manage to top DxOMark chart and we expect OnePlus 7 Pro will do the same.

The OnePlus 7 will have dual cameras on the back, retaining the same 48 MP primary lens and combining it with a 5 MP Depth Sensor for bokeh effect. This combination should keep prices low while still providing an improved photography experience when compared to its predecessor.

  • Resolution: 48 MP + 5 MP Depth (OnePlus 7), 48 MP + 16 MP + 8 MP (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • Sensor size: Unknown
  • Aperture: f/1.7 (OnePlus 7), f/1.6 + f/2.2 + f/2.0 (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • Zoom: unknown (OnePlus 7), 3x optical, 10x digital (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • Flash: yes, LED
  • Image stabilization: yes, OIS + EIS (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • RAW support: yes
  • Lens cover: sapphire crystal
  • Object detection: Unknown
  • Formats: Unknown

While there have been little rumors regarding the video performance, we can make some predictions based on its predecessor and its SoC. First, it should be able to handle 4K recording at 60 fps. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 can handle this with ease, and the 6T was already offering this option on the Snapdragon 845. Slow motion video should also be possible, with the SoC supporting 480 fps at 720p.

One thing we do know is that the 3x optical zoom is also available for video. Rumors have it stabilized although we don’t know if its EIS or OIS.

  • Resolution: 720p, 1080p, and 4K (2160p)
  • Max frame rate: 4K at 60 fps, 1080p at 60 fps, 720p at 60 fps
  • Slow motion: Unknown
  • Time-lapse: Unknown
  • Photos: Unknown
  • Zoom: 3x optical zoom (OnePlus 7 Pro)

Audio

A leaked case of the OnePlus 7 shows a hole on the bottom edge which appears to be for a 3.5 mm headphone jack. However, take this with a grain of salt, as the leaked renders from OnLeaks and Pricebaba don’t show the same port. All rumors indicate the 7 Pro will not have the port but will include a pair of Bullet Wireless earbuds. One rumored upgrade to the OnePlus 7 Pro is the heavily demanded stereo speakers, a first for OnePlus smartphones.

  • 3.5 mm headphone jack: no
  • Stereo speakers: no (OnePlus 7), yes (OnePlus 7 Pro)
  • Mics: Unknown
  • Max speaker volume: Unknown

Media Formats

The OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro should support the usual set of codecs found in Android phones.

  • Audio: MP3, AAC, AAC+, WMA, AMR-NB, AMR-WB, WAV, FLAC, APE, OGG, MID, M4A, IMY
  • Video: MKV, MOV, MP4, H.265(HEVC), AVI, WMV, TS, 3GP, FLV, WEBM

Sensors

We expect OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro to include the same sensors as the 6T.

  • Accelerometer: yes
  • Ambient light: yes
  • Barometer: no
  • Color temperature: yes
  • Compass: yes
  • Gravity: no
  • Gyroscope: yes
  • Hall: no
  • Infrared: no
  • Laser: no
  • Pedometer: no
  • Proximity: yes

We are not sure if the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro will update the satellite navigation technology, but we expect at least the same support as the 6T.

  • GPS: yes
  • aGPS: no
  • Glonass: yes
  • BeiDou: yes
  • Galileo: yes
  • QZSS: no

Connectivity

We strongly believe that OnePlus will announce three phones during their May 7 event: the OnePlus 7, OnePlus 7 Pro, and the OnePlus 7 5G. The OnePlus 7 5G will actually be a variant of the Pro model but will visually different in some details. This variant will not coming to the US.

While the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 supports up to Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax), no phone released with the SoC besides the Samsung Galaxy S10 lineup includes support. This leads us to believe the OEMs have to add support, so there is a chance it doesn’t appear to save cost.

  • Wi-Fi: 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac
  • Bluetooth: 5.0
  • NFC: yes
  • Cellular: nano-SIM
  • Port: USB Type-C 3.1

Security

Regarding security, the OnePlus 7 and 7 Pro will once again use an in-display fingerprint sensor. Our hope is that they upgrade to an ultrasonic sensor, which wasn’t available at the time of the 6T’s release. With the newer sensors, you will be able to authenticate when your fingers are wet or dirty, and you can unlock your phone without having to wake the display first.

  • Fingerprint scanner: yes, in-display
  • Face scanner: no
  • Iris scanner: no
  • Manual authentication: password, PIN, pattern, swipe
