Ahmedabad: Man held for killing 11-year-old for smartphone | Ahmedabad News

AHMEDABAD: An 11-year-old boy was allegedly killed at Rampura village in Detroj taluka of Ahmedabad district, just because the accused, a 21-year-old man, wanted the victim’s smartphone, worth Rs 4,000.
Local crime branch (LCB) of Ahmedabad rural police on Wednesday caught the accused, Pravin Bajania, a native of Rajpur village of Kadi taluka in Mehsana and a resident of Kaaz village near Rampura.
The slaying took place on August 2, when the victim, Punaji Amratji Thakor, the son of farm labourers, was going home while playing on the smartphone. Bajania saw the boy with the smartphone and decided to snatch it from him, said an LCB official.
When Bajania tried to snatch the smartphone, the boy resisted and started screaming. Bajania overpowered Thakor, dragged him to bushes near a field at Rampura and slashed Thakor’s throat with a sharp-edged weapon.
After Thakor died following the attack, Bajania dug a hole, buried the body and fled with the smartphone.
LCB police inspector D N Patel said that the smartphone stolen by Bajania got switched off and the accused did not use it for a long time. On Tuesday, he managed to charge the smartphone and switched it on. As Bajania started using the smartphone, police traced its location and nabbed him from Detroj.
During his questioning, Bajania said that he did not have an Android phone and wanted one by hook or by crook. When he saw Thakor alone and with the smartphone in his hands, he tried to snatch the phone. He said he had to kill Thakor as he resisted and began screaming.
Ahmedabad rural police booked Bajania for murder.
